I would be interested in your "October" tour of Hudson
County cemeteries. I live at the Jersey Shore, and if
you could keep me (the list ) informed of the date
Yes...I believe from the letter written by Thomas
Shanahan that mentions the Cholera epidemic could have
taken place in the 1890's.
Here's why...although my letter is only partial (we only
have the last 9 of 13 pages) I have another letter which
was written by my great grand aunt Nora Mildred Shanahan
in which she says that her cousin T.J. Shanahan (writer
of the letter in question) corresponded with her mother
AFTER her father's death (which occured in 1887) AND in
the letter T.J. Shanahan also
Hello Jack and all listers:
I just today called VitalChek and found out that they require all genealogy
requests to be made by mail in writing (not online or by phone). Of course
just being a genealogy buff, that seems strange--who else would be
requesting records?:) Oh well, I guess it will take longer for us. I do
recommend calling the office and checking charges, address, research time
and what they require to be able to do their research before sending the
letter It might be worth seeing if they wi

Hi there everyone!
Have just uncovered a letter from an ancestor Thomas
Shanahan (undated, of course!!!) believe it was written
sometime in the late 1800's (sometime after 1887).
Anyhow, am trying to zero in on a date from clues in the
letter. One thing that is mentioned is a Cholera
scare:
"We had a Cholera scare here last summer and it really
was quite serious as there was ships laying down the bay
with cases of that dreaded fever on board. It is the
most deadly of all the diseases."

Hi,
Though I have no Idea of where to tell you to look, You might find out the
name of the genealogy society of either Jersey City or Hudson County and see
if you can donate the album.

Both my Great-Grandparents came from Irland to Ellis Island and then to Jersey City For about 2 years ( not together )
My Great-Grandmother Mary Farley was only 16 at the time ( I do not know if she was alone ) and came over in 1855.
My Great-Grandfather ( John McCaffrey ) came over in 1856 and met each other some how and moved to Beaver Dam,WI. Then they got married in 1858, lived and died there.
How can you find out where they lived in Jersy City and any other family members ?
Thank Yo
Hi, all!
I'm brand new to the list. My name is Bonnie Petrie...and I've been researching my family for some time. Unfortunately, one branch contains an incredibly stubborn brick wall that leads all the way to Hudson County, NJ.
It's my g-grandfather John "Jack" George PETRIE. He was born in Jersey City in February, 1892. His parents MAY have been named John and Katie, and they MAY have been born in NY. "Jack"'s obit says he was educated in Jersey City schools, but I know he began working on ships at

Also, what would be the likely Roman Catholic church for Stevens Ave?

Hi! I'm looking for any information on my GGrandmother, who settled in the
Weehawken area of Hudson County. Her maiden name was Mary Mucius, b. August
06, 1896, she married Konstanty Golaszewski and had 5 girls who all grew up
in the area, (Audrey,Helen,Eva,Irene, and Lucielle). She also ran a general
store in the area, "Mary's" and I am also interested in gaining any
information on that
Hi Kristine:
I have found directories on FHL films for Jersey City and Hoboken for the
years 1865-1874. I did not go further because those were the years I
needed. I believe they may have them for later years too. If you go to the
FHL catalog on line and check in locality for Hudson County, NJ you will
find them. Then you can order them into your local Family History Center.
If you have further questions, let me know.

I am wondering where I might find information on these groups from the
early 1900's. My grandfather played violin in these two orchestras, and
I would like to know more about it - or even better - to find a picture.
Thx

Probably need a little more information to actually
figure if the school district has what you want. NJ
does not have anything called a school census.
A student's permanent record is SUPPOSED TO remain
with the last school attended. That does not guarantee
that the school district did as required.
School registers of attendance are only required to be
kept about six years. Although, some districts keep
those as well.

thanks to everyone who responded. I should be able to get to the
library within the next two weeks now that school is out. Please be
patient, as I do this in between three young children's schedules.
I will not be accepting any new ones until I have cleared these out. I
will try to post again one more time this summer for anyone who missed
out.
I'll be in touch.

To everyone who replied to my request for help on the
cholera epidemic in Jersey City as well as in Hamburg,
Many Thanks...this mailing list is simply the
best....everyone always has the answers right at their
fingertips!
Also thanks to to everyone who replied with info on
enumeration districts for the York Street and 10th

lot of searching to do know but at least I know where to
start.
And thanks for helping my geographically challenged
