Thanks for the chart estimating the birthdate of John GARRISON.
In Marriage Records, Hunterdon Co., NJ 1795-1875, by Deats, it lists
the marriages of:

John GARRISON and Martha TITUS, 26 Apr 1828, 2-332 (Boggs)
John GARRISON and Joanna SUTPHIN, 22 Dec 1812, 2-5 (Boggs).

Thanks to all for your thoughts about the origin of the first name OSE.
Re, the idea that it's from the Latin Bible, Hosea=Ose. I'd found that
early on but feel strongly that this is not the source because it was a
male name in the Bible but more important most of these people would not
have been using a Catholic translation of the Bible.
I found a database on the web listing Dutch female names and found:
Oceana, Orsil, Orsina, Ose, Ozia, and Ozora. Somehow I feel this is more
likely the explanation.
Q. Were George GARRISON & Hendrick GULICK simply good friends or were they
likely to have been kinsmen of some kind?
Q. Does anyone have more information on the ancestors and descendants of
George GARRISON?

Thanks to a private response from a helpful correspondent (see below), I now
know of another GARRISON-VAN SYCKEL connection...
Were Lydia (GARRISON) VAN SYCKEL and John GARRISON both children of George &
Mary (JOHNSON) GARRISON? Does anyone have more information on George &
Mary?

My great-great-grandfather was Alexander M. Thatcher b. 18 Jul 1818 and
it's been very hard trying to find his birthplace and family. His death
certificate said Pennsylvania, his son's census record said New Jersey
and he lived out his days in Massachusetts. All have Thatcher
families. Has anyone heard of him here?
Thanks very much.

Hello to all from a new subscriber to the NJHUNTER mail list.
At the present time, I can probably be of more help to researchers since I am working on a project to computerize and index the Hunterdon Gazette (and Farmer's Weekly Advertiser) the first newspaper published in the county. The first issue was dated March 24, 1825 and it ceased publication when it was bought out by "The Democrat" in July 1866.
I have completed the years 1825 through 1833 and have over 5000 names and 500 pages of newspaper items
INDEXING AND LOOK-UPS FOR THE HUNTERDON GAZETTE: 1825 - 1866
FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
I am doing the project as a public service to all the descendants of the people who "made it into the Hunterdon Gazette!", the first newspaper published at Flemington, New Jersey, during its brief existence in the lives of our ancestors for the period 1825 to 1866. I have completed 1825-1833.
When I was doing my own genealogic research on my Hunterdon Ancestors, I had exhausted the usual sources - family records (
Most everything on Genealogy.com cost extra money. I really haven't found
anything on Genealogy.com, except one month I paid for the 1900 census to
look up people who moved and I didn't know where to. Only a few came up, but
thats all I have ever found. I've had better luck with Ancestry.com. I have
found a few things on Ancestry while searching that has been very helpful,
and the only extra fees are for the census and UK/Ireland, where
genealogy.com seems to have an extra fee for everything you w
Hello Debra,
I just went through some of my notes, I'm not sure if this will be a
connection for you, but in the LDS records that I have for NJ, I see an
Alexander Thatcher son of Amos Thatcher and Jemina Corwin b. 3 Feb 1801.
Hope this helps in some small way. I scanned the remaining notes that I had
on my Thatcher family and came up with nothing.

There was still a Stires family in Hopewell Township
as recently as the 1960s as I went to school with one
of them. Check the local listings!

Debbye,
It might be Lambertville, NJ. It might also be Lumberville, PA, just
a few miles up the Delaware River from Lambertville, NJ. Lumberville
is a village in Solebury Township, Bucks County, PA.
Good luck!

Interesting find. I am still sorting out all of the John GARRISONs of
Hunterdon County but you may want to know that Bethy Christy is also

Information on First names 'Ose' or 'Osee':
The Hunterdon Gazette database covering the period 1825 - 1833 (+ 5,000 Hunterdon names) is in Excel so I ran "ose" in the 'Edit' 'Find' Macro and found Miss Osee Symington:
Hunterdon Gazette. No. 31: Thursday, October 20, 1825.
Married: In Kingwood, on the 12th inst. by the Rev. David Bateman, Mr. Jonathan

The full first name has been the usual practice in the "Married" notices in the Gazette, so my assumption would be that "Ose

Ruth,
I subscribed to Ancestry, and the census images I used, once I got them to
come up right, were pretty good. I, too, am in the 1700s, and I'm finding
very little on Ancestry; it doesn't even have everything I've found by going
to the NJ State Archives in Trenton. I don't plan to renew Ancestry.
