2. [NJHUNTER] Firthtown, NJ [1]
While researching my ggrandparents, William and Adaline Crotsley, I found they had lived in Firthtown, NJ. I can't find Firthtown on any map, even the old ones. Does anyone know what happened to it and how I can find the census for 1840-50-60-70---- I believe it was in Hunterdon or Warren Co. as I found other Crotsley's in both places. Shirley
3. Re: [NJHUNTER] Old Newspapers [1]
I agree, that is the best web site. I have gone through every year and can hardly wait to see the next year. http://home.att.net/~dennis.sutton/News/paperhistory.htm I found it very easy to go and search. All you do is go to edit, select find, and enter a name and press enter and it will bring you to the first listing of the name you entered. If your name is not listed it will say "Search String Not Found". That means your name is not listed in the page. I have read all the years listed and it

6. Re: [NJHUNTER] slavery abolished in what year in NJ? [1]
From The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey , Vol. 54, Nos. 2/3, May/Sept. 1979: "The New Jersey Assembly in 1804 passed an act to gradually abolish slavery within the state. The act provided that every child born of a slave after the fourth of July of that year was to be free, but should remain the servant of the owner of the mother, as if bound out by the Overseer of the Poor, until the age of twenty-five years, if a male, or twenty-one years, if a female. All slave births were to be recorded by the c

9. [NJHUNTER] Tidbits [1]
I want to thank all of you who have expressed their thanks for the Tidbits. I enjoy putting them out there for all to see. I stop and think of who we have changed through the years and to see that people were interested in who was visiting and what children were home from school visiting their parents. These days we don't even know our own neighbors let alone most of a town. But you never know what might turn up and whose name you might see that might help someone.

>From pages 3 and 4 of Lequear's "Traditions of Hunterdon" (originally published 1869-70). By Revell's Book of Surveys, now in the Secretary of State's office at Trenton, it appears that in May, 1699, 20,000 acres, lying along the Delaware, north of 10,000 acres surveyed for Dr. Cox, north of the 'Falls of the Delaware,' at Trenton, were surveyed for the Society of Friends. One of the first portions of the land in Amwell that was taken up by settlers, was that near Mt. Airy, known as Dismal tract, embracin

17. [NJHUNTER] answer to Rich Fisher(Chamberlain) [1]
Thanks for your June 11 message, Rich. Your information about Alpheus Chamberlin being married to a Cox is not incorrect. Cox was a first wife and I descend from Catherine Young, the 2nd wife. A friend went to the Hunterdon County Surrogate's Office and found Alpheus Chamberlain in Will #8-309. It was made in 14 Mar 1848 and proved in 12 Apr 1848. It mentions wife Catharine, grandson Alpheus Chamberlain Kuhl(my ancestor), deceased daughter Mary, & sons Edward and Lewis and daughter Sarah. One correction I h

20. Re: [NJHUNTER] More Tidbits from old papers [1]
Does NJ have any very early 1800's newspaper clippings? Also are you aware of any German newspapers in the area, which might cover up to 1850's? Hi; its that Fulper person....We e-mailed back and forth several months age. Your post was a great one hope you have had lots of response! That Catherin Fulper, who married Atley in 1800 seems to be a real mystrey. One response that was of real intrest to me was the one for William Phulper. The time frame seems to be one that might fit in with Jacob Fulper and Catherine Hoppock Fulper of Amwell. Wonder where this informaton came from. If the spelling has been incorrect, there could be others, and this co
