Looking for more information on John CAVANAUGH (a/k/a CAVANAGH) and
antecedents. John was born in 1781, very possibly in Orange County, NY.
He owned a farm in Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, NJ in the early 19th
century. After twice becoming a widower, he married Caroline (or perhaps
Rebecca Caroline) SCHOMP (b. 1801) about 1820. He held various elective
offices in Hunterdon County, including Sheriff.
After some apparent financial reversals, John and his wife moved to
Philadelphia about 1830, wher
I just joined this list yesterday - why I took so long I don't know,
considering my interest in ancestors from the County (more at a later date
on that). I found myself in the midst (or perhaps at the tail-end) of an
ongoing discussion about the Historical Society.
I had contact with the Society 3-4 years ago, with mixed results. I did
obtain some information, but I felt I had to extract it like someone
pulling teeth. And I'm reasonably sure there was more there - I asked some
follow-up questions in a lett

Dear List,
I was in my local LDS center this evening and they did have a letter there
that had been sent out from Salt Lake City to all the LDS centers. In it they
discussed the site at Familysearch.com and said that it was a test program
that will only be running for a few weeks in March. It also cautioned that
internet use is not now allowed for family history research in its centers.
I'm sure that if you ask at your local center they would show it to you.
Hello List members.....
I responded privately to Bruce's message regarding the HCHS annual meeting,
asking if he would take some of our comments to the meeting and share our
concerns. He has agreed to try and share a summary of our concerns IF someone
can summarize our discussions. I believe someone in CA was willing to do
something similar to a summary. Could that person get in touch?
As I told Bruce -
"I guess my concern is that it does no good to save documents and
information for posterity.
The following is pretty self explanitory. I wrote asking if, perhaps, I
misunderstood the mission of the Hunterdon County Historical Society. I'm
joining the "Society" and hope many, many people do the same. Kill 'em with
kindness :-)

Hi,
I have always had results when I write to the newspaper in the area. A
letter to the Editor might get the attention of the members of the Board as
well as the one's who sit on the records. I too live in California and can
to think that there is no way to access the information is terrible.
I am not here to bash the volunteers, after all we are all volunteers. And
we try to help each other, isn't that what this list is for? But Customer
Service is a sore spot with me, it seems to have gone right ou
Dear Rick and all-
After so much discussion about the Hunterdon County Historical Society, I
found one of their Newsletters from last spring with an article written
by Dieter H. Boehme, a German descendant of the Rockenfeller family, who
describes his search to connect his line with the American/Hunterdon
County family of Joh. Peter. Ironically, in it he thanks the society
and Mrs. Carkhuff for the help they provided!
The article refers to Dr. Henry O. Rockefeller's family genealogy

If you can get the "real thing", a microfilm or fiche...there is!! It might
give you the names of everyone in the house at the time of the census...the
earlier reports only give the Head of Household name...but some of the later ones
give lots and lots of data. Try a local Family History Center or Genealogical
Library...you can easily do some of this by phone to find out where to go and
view the films.

You took the words right out of my mouth... I have donated several items to
their holdings and even become a member and still get the rude and abusive
treatment almost every time I visit, which is a total turn off and makes me
swear that I will never go back. It should not be a crisis if I forget to
use the special color coded paper clips when I want a photocopy! And dare
I ask for more than 5 copies!

Yes Wendy I did make it to the login page. As you see on the page it is
only in a test phase and apparently the LDS has their own ppl testing their
program to refine it. You see the page will later be closed down and they
give us no startup date on the page. Guess we have to wait.

I'll be anxious to hear back from Bruce Sinclair on the results of the
Historical Society's meeting. Hope there are many of our group in
attendance. From the previous information, I have the impression that the
Hunterdon Hist. Soc. probably envisions their mission to be publishing their
Journal articles and preserving - rather than sharing - their historical
data. Undoubtedly they are not willing to help with one's individual
research, are probably inundated with written requests, many of which may

I am with everyone too. Our families are the histories. Without them we all
have no past.
It is a sad day that this wealth of information is being hiden from the eyes
of the descendants, who's family my be listed in these records. I will gladly
add my name to the list . I would like to thank all those counties in NJ who
gladly help and do the best they can. Without them where would we be in our
research. And shame on those who don't.

Could someone kindly lookup a few names from the following books? I'd really
