1. [NOR-VOSSELAG] 2008 Sogn/VOSS/Valdres Heritage Tour [1]
Listers, hello, I thought I would put this note on the Vosselag List to make sure everyone is aware of our 2008 Sogn/Voss/Valdres Heritage Tour. One of the nice things about this tour for those of us with Vossing ancestry is that we arrive in Voss on Sunday, August 3rd and we are there until the morning of Wednesday, August 6th. During this time there is a day trip to Bergen and there is time for farm visits in the Voss, Evanger, Vossestrand, Granvin, Ulvik, and Vik areas. We tour a number of places in

Sounds good. I wish we could go as we have relatives in Voss. Gaute and Marta Sandvik. He is about 73 years of age. His sister lives there too. 3. Photo from Vossevangen [1]
From the information everyone gathered (wow!) I feel pretty safe to assume this photo was taken in Norway. Jean suggested the photo might be a sibling of Nil's instead of my great-grandparents. She has a scan of it and is seeing if she can find a family member in Norway who recognizes the people. I assume it is unlikely to be my great-grandmother's family (her name was Sigrid Severinsdatter from Selbu) but the assumption is based on the photo location, and lack of knowledge about social customs of the ti
4. Re: More questions about the family of Lars Isakson& Inger Olsdatter - Vestreim Farm - Voss [1]
Karen, I don't have empirical data on this oldest son leaving issue, but I can tell you that the same happened in the case of my great-grandfather who left from Vossestrand in 1883. He sold the farm he inherited to his younger brother, and then came to South Dakota. In a sense, this inherited farm became a ticket to the new world. I have sensed there might have been a bit of ill feeling on the part of the younger brother's family about this issue. I don't know if that was because the younger brother

Hi! Just a couple of notes: 1. Vossingen, 9th year, no. 1, 1927 has been loaded 2. If you use the Voss Genealogical Resources page, be sure to reload the page before starting. Hi Vivian! Thanks for the website, some interesting photos of Vangen. Does anyone know the history of photographer C. A. ERICHSEN? He has some photos on the Vangen page, 1911-1920. I have a C.A. Ericksen in my data and just searched for the family in the US census, without luck I might add. I have one such, born Oslo, marring my gr grandaunt MARIE KNUTSEN ROKNE, b 2 AUG 1890. I question my data on this as I have Marie emigrating 12 Sep 1906 and remember a note that I can not find now that she marri

Karen, is the family listed below in the 1865 and 1875 census records your family? I find them in Volume 4, Vossaboki? This family does not match the names you have given for all of the children. The Nils Larson in this family was married in 1891 to a Maria Johansdatter Skutle. Could you tell us more information about your Nils Larsson, such as what farm he came from, his birth year, etc. Jean Marthaler 1865-telling for 1235 Voss District no. Page School distr. 10. Larsen [1]
My great-grandfather, Nils Larsen, son of Lars Nielson & Synneva Throndsdatter supposedly left Norway in 1884 with his brother Isak and sisters Gjertrud & Cecelia. I found him on the 1865 and 1875 census. He married my great-grandmother Sigrid Severinsdatter (Sefrin?) in 1893 supposedly in the U.S. but the photograph makes me wonder if they didn't return to Voss to get married. Does anyone have any more information on him? Or how I go about finding relatives in Norway? Karen King

Hi Karen and Jean, I have several Vossevangen photos from a von der Fehr. Not sure if it Herman von der Fehr but is of the same time frame, 1880-1890's. I will find these and send one or two to the both of you I know were taken in Norway. Just looked and I have Herman Henrik von der Ferh in my database. A note "photographer in Bergen" b. 26 Dec 1861, married to Cecelia Susanna Fleischer. (Glimmfetti, pg 37-38 and from my Schlanbusch Familien manuscript) I think this is the photographer in questi

As some of you are aware, I am doing the OCR of the issues of Vossingen and Dr. Nuland is translating them. Most were published from 1920 to 1930, and our project is about 75% finished. In doing the OCR for the next issue, I'm reminded that some time ago there was conversation about Knut Fenne, the well-known musician and violinist from Chicago. On page 23 of the issue of 1927, Nr. 2-3, Hefte 26-27, there is a write-up of the death of Knut's mother, Cecilia Fenne. Here the the original Norwegian text

As usual, I don't bother to check the facts too closely, but Im pretty certain that there were several photograpers in the vd Fehr family. Karen mentioned one (Herman), Jena mentioned two (two Johans, father and son), and I believe that there were also two duaghters in the family, whose studio was called Sxstrene von der Fehr. I was skimming through Kindem (volume I), Gjerdeker (both volumes), and all Gamalt fre Voss, and was surprised when I couldnt find a single article about the pre-war photographe

Karen, to answer one of the questions you have you just need to look at the pages from the Vestrheim farm that I sent you about a week ago. They are in Norwegian but if you follow the family back from page 50 to page 49 you will be able to see who the parents are of Lars Isakson born 1819. His father was Isak Knutson born 1780 and Isak Knutson's father was Knut Torbjxrnson Seve born 1756. Knut Torbjxrnson's father was Torbjxrn Masson Seve. This info is all on pages 49 and 50 under Bruk 3. The info on eac

Hi Karen and Jean and Al, I will give you an update on the von der Fehr photographers based on the information I have from Mr. Tryggve Fett, the director of the Gamle Bergen museum in Bergen: The photographer Johan von der Fehr (1833-1901) was married to Helchine M. Eckhoff (1839-1929). They had (at least) 14 children: 1) Maria Dorothea (1859-), who left emigrated to the US (Chicago) and was married to Mr. Max Blessing. 2) Herman Henrik Johan (1861-1913). He started as photographer in his father's busin

I just double checked and I had it wrong. The 100th Anniversary of Fertile book says his name was Nels L. Vesterheim, born in 1865 at the Opheim farm in Voss, Norway. Son of Lars Isakson Vesterheim and Ingjerd Opheim. My mother always heard he changed his last name because it was too common here. I assume it was Larsen. -----Original Message----- From: Jean Marthaler [mailto:marwendt@astound.net] Sent: Friday, March 03, 2006 4:54 PM To: 'Karen King'; NOR-VOSSELAG-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: Nils Larsen

Hi, I checked with Jon Raymond who does work on the Norway List and his ancestry is from Polk County, Minnesota. He does not recall ever seeing the name of Herman V D Fehr being used in Polk County as a photographer. The person you are referring to is probably the one who was a photographer. It is interesting to see he was married to a Fleischer. I did look at the entry and the Glimmfetti and it appears he died fairly young and his widow remarried. We look forward to seeing if you learn more about him in

Ruth, I want to thank you for making such a wonderful Voss resource page available for all of us to use. It is presented in a great format and very easy to understand. On page 161, Bruk 6 of Prestegarden of the Volume One, Vossaboki it says the following about the Fehr family. It appears his father took over the bruk in 1890 so I suppose Herman could have come to America and still used the same photo equipment.
