I would expect there will be lots of cameras in attendance. And I know that in previous years, Svein Ulvund has taken pictures. If he's not off railroading, I'm sure he will be there. I haven't met Svein previously, but hope that I may soon!

Doris,
In 1930, Vosselag published the work of K. A. Rene entitled "Historie om
Udvandringen fra Voss og Vossingerne i Amerika". It was 800+ pages and was
in an old Norwegian and thus, not readable at all by non-Norwegian speaking
Americans and difficult for Vossings. The book had first a historic overview
of Voss, then a year by year accounting of the emigrants from Voss up until
the mid 1800s, and then sections on areas (eg, emigrants to Freeborn county,
MN) or other topics (clergy from Voss).

Hi all,
Yesterday was spent recovering from the Voss trip. Today I try to catch
up on emails and get back to a my normal everyday life. I thought some
of you would like to hear about some of the Voss trip. I am sure others
will talk of this when they get settled in.
We had great time in Voss! This was my first visit to Norway and I can
now honestly say I am very proud to have family roots in Voss. First I
would like to thank all of you in Voss for your welcome and work on this
2005 Vosselag trip.
I'm not quite sure if this is interesting to all, but since the entire list has read the question, some of you may be wondering what the answer is:
My father was not involved with Gamalt fre Voss then. Some years later he became part of the editorial board, before becoming editor some time in the early 90's, and remained in that position until 2002.
For those of you going to Voss in the next weeks: I'm sure there will be copies available there as well, but my guess would be that it will be just as cheap

Hi Dick
Here is an article that I found in today's supplement to the Newspaper
"Hordaland". It's a supplement about the Norway 100 years celebration
1905-2005 when Norway became independent from Sweden.

Hi all,
I started working on my digital photos of the trip. For those
interested in seeing some of these I have uploaded a few to a web page.

Some photos of the two Syttande Mai processions, the 10am children's and

I will add more to this site.

NOR-VOSSELAG listers - if you would like for me to send the scan of the
article and picture, let me know. It is large at 1.3MB, but is well worth
the wait if you are on dial-up. If I have time a bit later, I will OCR the
text and send that to the list. It is, of course, pe Norsk.
Laurann (from Vesterheim in Decorah), how 'bout that! Your picture taking
pays off!
Listers,
In making preparations for the trip to Voss, I came across these paragraphs
about items that Vosselag donated to Vesterheim for safe keeping. I have a
request in to Vesterheim to borrow the cow bell to take to Voss and use for
the Saturday banquet. I don't know yet if permission will be granted.

Karen,
The flag you mention is a different one, that evidently went from the U.S.
(an American flag as you mention) to Voss. I think I've heard the story you
mention elsewhere, but I don't remember where.
The Vosselag banner is the one pictured in the first pages of the Rene
translation. It had text and then a hand painted picture of Voss, and is
mentioned in the Rene book.
The American flag - I wonder where it is now! Perhaps that question to the
list might be of interest?

Many of you are getting ready to go to Voss..oh, how I wish I could have gone.I was there in 1999, and this year we are taking a cruise along the coast of Norway called Norwegian Fjords and North Cape with Holland America Line. Will take a tour that goes to Voss for luncheon at Fletchers hotel, so at least my husband can see where my family came from. Have a wonderful time and I will be looking at vossnow.com everyday! Happy 17th May!!! Fondly, Doris "Duffy" (Johnson) Eastburn (Rokne/Hylle)
And if any don't have a copy but would like one. There are more available. I
have a dozen or so and there may be more in Norway. I'm selling copies for
$12 + $3 shipping, total $15. It is a wonderful book, hardcover with many
pictures and all the articles are of interest.
Eirik, was your father the editor at that time? I know that Kari Bye was
very involved in the project.

The community of Voss presented a large (three foot by 8 foot) banner to Vosselag (I think in 1919) which was used for lag events until it became too fragile about 15 years ago. It now rests with special protection at Vesterheim in Decorah, IA.
As those going to Voss in a short time may know, Voss, along with other Norwegian communities have festive parades to celebrate their national day.
In preparation for participation in the parade in Voss, Vosselag was asked if it were possible to bring the flag to
Hi,
about the American flag - it was discovered in the town hall of Voss (tinghuset) in 1985. There is a very short article about it, with a photo of it, at the end of Gamalt fre Voss 1985, which many of you will have, as all the articles dealt with emigration, and all articles were printed in both Norwegian and English.

Hi Keith,
We have printed the first six copies, which already have homes. One was
presented to the Voss community during our wonderful Voss stay last week.
We haven't decided yet how we are going to do the marketing - whether
Vosselag will take orders and have them processed or whether we will have
bookstores take care of the whole process.
We printed the first sets in hardcover, but it will be available in either
hard for soft. It is in two volumes, as 800 plus pages is too large for one
book and i
This good news from Svein - - so there will be some photos at www.vossnow.net after the parade.
Hi Dick
You can be sure I am there, as usually :-)
But I will probably not have time to upload the pictures before late evening, this is a busy day, and lots to do.
And I hope to meet you too during the day.
Greetings from
Svein
Wishing you all a great trip.
We will be in Voss on July 4 and staying with
Dagestad. Greet Guro and Rognald for us..
they will be arraigning your visits to farms.

Hi! Please explain this book. I must have missed information about it
earlier.Does it show farms in Voss and area? Also, is it in English? What
does Rene mean? Sorry I'm not very knowledgeable, but am interested. Thanks!

Doris 'your' Torstein Erikson Rokne is mentioned on pp 320 & 717. When I
did a search, on my computer, in the .pdf book, I found 'my' John Haldorson
Bjxrgo listed more often than the pages he was listed in the index. (99,
101, 110, 111, 116, 249) I am in hopes than I can afford the hard copy, as
it is much easier to use than the computer version. My computer is pretty
old and doesn't have enough RAM. I can navigate in the 839 page book but my
computer tends to freeze and has to be rebooted.
Ivar Aasen? Did I just hear my cue?
As some of you know, I work at the Ivar Aasen centre in Xrsta, some hours north of Norway. We have a big selection of Aasen's texts available on our web site, www.aasentunet.no. For some reason, this poem is not included there. It's used in Aasen's play "Ervingen", or "The heir", from 1855. In the play, it doesn't have a title, but it's opening line is today used as its title - Dei vil alltid klaga og kyta. Here is the entire poem:
