4. Re: Ancestry's Historical Newspaper Collection [1]
I tried it last year, didn't like it, and cancelled. Ancestry talked me into trying again recently, and it's improved a lot. Yes, it's indexed. They've worked at having it hit more accurately the names you ask for. The images do take forever to load, at least with my home computer. But I've found a couple of neat things already. On one of my lines they matched me up with wierd words rather than the surname, but for the most part it works well. Robin --- Diane Gladieux wrot
5. Re: pre 1905 death index [1]
Hi Carla, I am not an expert on this subject, but I believe deaths were registered in one form or another.....just not in a central register until 1905. It sounds like you have a gggranny like my ggranny, I haven't found her either.....and I know she died. lol You might try Church records for the area she lived, if you know that. My only other suggestion, is keep posting queries to NORCAL, you never know what someone might be able to help with, and there are a lot of nice people on the list. Leslie

Greetings: On the 1920 US Federal Census, Samuel P. BOWEN had a store in Pinole, and he and his wife were there until about 1929. Was there a newspaper in Pinole during that time, and if so, where might I find copies which might contain an ad? I live in hope, Dona

12. RE: Calif Death index can not read infor [1]
Do you mean that you cannot read the data at all? Or is it that you cannot find what you are looking for? It is very possible a death in 1909 was not recorded at the state level. The legislation that required the counties to report vital statistics to Sacramento was supposed to be implemented in 1905. Implementation was not uniform. The more rural, the smaller the county, the slower they were to comply. There is no hard data on compliance, but it is clear that not every county started forwarding data 01/

22. "The Big Four" [1]
I just finished reading Oscar Lewis' "The Big Four", a VERY interesting book written in 1938 about the development of the railroads east over the Sierra out of Sacramento. I started reading it with not much enthusiasm, but ended up extremely interested in the subject. I also enjoyed reading about the fight over the Oakland waterfront by the powers that be of that era, including the "nickel ferries" and the political maneuverings by the railroads and the other operators. Also the story of the Battle of Musse
