1. Bethel Hospital [1]
I'm searching for further details on John FORREST who died in Norwich 1823. The church register mentions 'Bethel' so presume he died in the hospital that used to be in Bethel Street. Does anyone know anything about this hospital, and whether any records still exist? Mum was born in Bethel Street (well, not literally you understand) and says it used to be an asylum. When young, she and her friends used to run past the hospital and tap on the windows disturbing all the patients, until a nurse came out and po

Can anyone point me to a site that has info on Soundex codes? One of my ancestors left Kings Lynn for America in 1907 but the films of the US passenger lists are filed according to their soundex code. I need to convert the names CLARK/RICHES to this code so I can order the correct film. MTIA Anne in Oz

But, as with the other 1891 indexes I have, this IS only an Index and gives the name and age and ref. no. To get all the other info you will have to then check the original returns. 7. CDROM 1881 census [1]
For aussie purchasers of the 1881 census I have just called the LDS at Carlingford. They advised that they are not taking back orders but are expecting supplies mid May and to contact them then. 8. Passengers to Australia [1]
I have just borrowed from my local library a book on the SS 'Great Britain' which travelled from Liverpool to Australia August 1852-1875. It contains a very large list of passengers carried during this period, except no lists available for sailings 11Dec1859/20Jul1860. Only one of the voyages went to Sydney, one to Brisbane and the rest were to Melbourne although other destinations are sometimes indicated. The index only gives name and age, and occasionally occupation,so cannot tell if any are from Norfol

Joan, A couple of good sources for your research are www.familysearch.org and the 1851 British census CD (cheap). I have been looking at Lamberts (a Charles Lambert married my Charlotte Finbow in 1864) but in Suffolk and just scanned through the Norfolk section of the CD. There are lots of Lamberts there and on the family search also. Regards Yvonne Kelly

Hi there As I am now fairly certain that several on my ancestors were called by one name at birth and death, but for the rest of their lives (even on their children's birth and marriage certs) were called something else, I was wondering how common occurrence this was in Norfolk and Suffolk? 21. SNETTISHAM CHAPELS [0.97126]
Hi Brenda, many thanks for the info sent re:- chapels, I will keep that on file in case I can`t find who i`m looking for. There`s a couple of persons (William FRAMINGHAM and Jane SATTER) who could be my 3 x -g- grandfathers parents if he was a fairly late baby. Their marraige and deaths are both in the Snettisham P.R. but no sign so far of any children. I suppose this could mean they had no children and are then not the couple I am looking for, that they lived elsewhere and came back to Snettisham

24. CURTIS - Southorpe [0.97126]
Hello All, I am a new member of the list and I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me! In the 1881 census I have a Thomas CURTIS aged 47 whose birthplace is listed as Southorpe NFK. I cannot find a Southorpe in Norfolk, and working on the assumption that the Norfolk part is right, can anyone suggest an alternative spelling for Southorpe? I wondered whether in the local dialect Southrepps might sound like Southorpe. Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks, Yvonne
