Hi everyone.
In the 1881 census all 6 males of working age in the household of my wifes
Morby family who had recetly moved to Wellingborogh are described as
excavators. Were they likely to be quarrying ironstone or limestone? or was
it perhaps some large civil engineering project that attracted them to the
town? Any suggestions. Regards Simon.
Ann,
It is a written record of a mans agreement to pay for the upkeep of an
illegitimate child. Generally not a voluntary agreement. A pregnant
unmarried woman would be "examined" by the parish overseers to ascertain who
is the father of her about to be born child. The parish was liable for the
upkeep of the child until the age of 14 and the overseers wanted where ever
possible to divest itself of the costs and get the father to pay. For every
Bastardy Bond there would be a matching record of the

Hi
I would be most grateful for confirmation of this entry I found on the IGI:
International Genealogical Index
Hannah Bardwell GASKILL - Gender: F Christening: 30 Mar 1794 Yelvertoft,
Independent, Northampton, England, Father John, mother Mary
This entry is a complete mystery as Hannah's siblings born before and after
Hannah were Christened in Nottingham. I am hoping the entry includes her
father's occupation but any scrap of information would be welcome. I have been

My great-grand mother, Mary Elizabeth Parnham, lived in Nottingham until the death of her husband, and then came to live in Northampton with her middle son John Stanley Smith (my grand father). Her death certificate says she was normally resident at 100 Delapre St, but she died at 137a Wellingborough Road. This was in February 1947. Does anyone know whether this address was a hospital or nursing home? I can't think of any other reason why she would be there.

From the NBI, I have information about a Charlotte COMPTON who was buried at
Easton on the Hill, Northants on 5/4/1868. She was 28.
Does anyone have her in their tree?
More importantly, does anyone know who her husband was?
Many thanks.
Suzie (from Orkney)
I am kinda stuck on these peeps respective grandparents so any info would be
appreciated!
In addition if anyone has any pictures of either William or Emma I would
love to have copies just to balance my tree photographically if nothing else!
(William born 1860, Emma born 1861 both in Chacombe)
I am still of course looking for the marriage of William's father Thomas to
Elizabeth Barrett (well that is the surname she gave on his birth certificate
and I have located her parents!)
Keep up the good work
Hi,
As a new list member, I would like to state my interests and quests.
My main focus is the EMERY family, mostly farmers, so far from the mid-1700s
in Whilton, Nether Heyford and Badby, and later in Daventry to the 1900s. I
am happy to share the information I have.
I am also looking for clues to the families of the following wives:
Ann PACKER (1748-1824), m Joseph EMERY 1769, Whilton
Jane JUDKINS (1771-1818), m Thomas EMERY 1792, Brockall (her parish)
Ann OSBORN/OSBOURN/OSBORNE (1799-1833), m Joseph EM
Some months ago there was a discussion on this list about the validity in England of a marriage between a man and his deceased wife's sister. I'm interested in the less common case of a man marrying his deceased wife's niece. I've been told that the 1835 Marriage Act banned such marriages. I want to verify this, and also to find out if and when this restriction was removed. More specifically, I want to test the validity of the marriage in 1848 of my g-grandfather to my g-grandmother, who was a niece of g-gr
I am desperately trying to find the surname of the wife of Thomas
GUTTERIDGE.
I know he married someone called Charlotte.
They were man and wife on the 1861 census.
Thomas was b in Wilbarston 1819 and Charlotte b Bulwick abt 1817.
FreeBMD has 2 possibilities.
One in Loughborough in 1850 but no Charlotte named on the page.
(Anyway I thought Loughborough a bit far...)
And another one in Lewisham where the wife could be Charlotte DALBY?
But why Lewisham?
I wondered if anyone has this name from Northants in

I am searching for a Family of STIRMEY who lived there circa the 1840s &
50s.
Samuel James STIRMEY married Maria CONSTABLE in Whilton, in June 1838,
and had sons Samuel John (1846) & Alfred Constable (1849) born there.
This seems to be a long time between children and marriage (for the
times) so I am wondering if there are any others present.
They may of course have died in the meantime, or have been born & th
Hi Chrissie.
My wife's great-grandfather, his parents, brothers and sisters all appear on
the 1901 census in Earls Barton with the spelling Mawby. The parents are on
the 1881 census spelt Morby, which is the spelling used on all certificates
we have, and is the way my wife's family spell it.This has proved to me how
important it is to look for varient spellings even in relatively recent
records.
Regards Simon.

The concept is simple to grasp but the application is complex. Marriage is
intended to make husband and wife one flesh . Any relative by marriage
becomes a relative; mother "in law" becomes a mother; sister "in law" a
sister. BUT
People did marry their sister in laws. This was made legal in the early
20th Century and marriages that had already occured were suddenly and
retrospectively recognised as legitimate. Lots had married and the local
church authorities must have known their relationship an

Hello all,
I have joined this list hoping someone can help me. The message mightn't seem to have anything to do with Northamptonshire at first, but please read on.
My ancestor Benjamin Scholes was born in Leeds in 1783. His daughter Mary Scholes was born in Leeds 27 February 1810, and only Benjamins name was given on the baptism entry at St Peter, Leeds. I hadn't been able to find a marriage that fitted in with the information that I had until I recently tracked Benjamin down on the 1851 Leeds census. His
