My cousin in Norway sent me 8 favorite recipes of the family at Christmas. All in Norwegian! Is there someone on the list willing to translate them for me OFF list? By the time I figure them out it would be July 4th! And of course I would be willing to share with the list any that might appeal! They are for: Smultringer Fattigmann Berlinerkranser Sandkaker Kokosmakroner Sirupssnipper Hvite kakemenn Pepperkaker Tusen Takk, Linda J. Guy

Never heard of that one. My Mom use to make what she called "Norwegian Butter Cookies" I remember it used one pound of butter to make and she put it through the cookie press in the shapes of trees, camels etc. My Grandfather from Fedje loved them! Does anyone have a recipe for them? I haven't been able to find them in the recipe sites listed here lately, I've looked. But I may of had a Senior moment and missed it somewhere. Thanks, Linda J. i can't understand why it's so hard to find! I live in RURAL PA and went to the little grocery and bought two .45 oz---12 gm bottle for $.99 each! I could buy it and ship it to anyone in the USA cheaper than the prices I'm seeing! Granted the bottle is small but it will do. Anyone really needs some contact me off list. Linda

My daughter Delores, has received cards from all over the country from this list. I thank everyone who sent her a card! After all the therapy to get her limbs working again, she really looks forward to the mail! She still can't move her legs, but has tingling in the right one and she can feel them touch her right big toe! So there is hope. But she has a long way to recovery. You don't know how much she enjoys all the cards. Again, Thanks so much. I have been trying to find a place to buy a bottle of Lennie

I have lots of good memories of Christmas with my Grandfather. Grandmother was an "American Lady" so I never knew any of the Norwegian customs and food at Christmas. This year is a lot different! Thanks to this list, and especially Odd, I have found over 300 of Grandfathers Norwegian family and I am in touch with a lot of them! They are helping me with the family history and the customs of my Norwegian heritage. I finally received a card from my only Aunt. She hasn't called or written in over two years! Sh

7. Akevitt & krumkake - Norwegian style [0.967568]
For what its worth; Aquavit or akevitt means "Life's Water". Its an alcoholic drink made from potatoes. I have been to the factory in Gjxvik, Oppland county and seen how the spiritus is made. It doesn't become Akevitt, however, until it has been stored in barrels for quite some time and not *real* Linie Akevitt until it has passed the Equator two times... Krumkake is a very thin cake cooked on a special, patterned hotplate. When the cake is still hot it is rolled into a cone shape. It hardens into the cru

10. RE: How do Norwegians decorate the house for Christmas [0.967568]
> WE leave Akevitt & Krumkaga all over the Hus. Hus = House We do bake "Krumkake" for Christmas (my favorite) and can also buy most kinds at the Store, some even bake a "Kransekake". "Akevitt" is an alchol that you drink straight (no mixing), they say that the best kind is "Linje Akevit" which has travelled across the Ecquator by ship. If I remember right the "Wilhelmsens Rederi" is the liner that transport them "down under and back up". Some people love the stuff, but none of us can stand it, but t
11. Den Norske Forening i New York [0.967568]
I just received two little booklets that belonged to my gg-grandfather. They appear to be records of his membership in the New York Norway Club from 1895-1912. The books appear to be the club rules and bylaws with a place to record monthly dues in the back. There are some names and addresses of officers. Can anyone tell me more about this club? On the cover it has Kontrabog mellem printed before the name of the club. Inside, before the bylaws, it says "Love" for Den Norske Forening. how does this tr

Hei Buland, Goodman married Brijnelson, Isabel/Brennard, Isabel, June 7, 1852, v. B, #207, LaSalle County, IL. Apparently the transcriber entered it twice in the IL Statewide Marriage Index, as she must have give both names. A copy of the marriage record may be obtained from the Regional Archives. The IRAD center at Northern IL Univ. seems to make no charge. Other centers may charge $1 for photocopy and postage. Isabel's brother Anders Brynildsen Saue's marriage, Dec. 18, 1858 is recorded under the nam

I just finished making Lefse for the first time. I have only began to experience some of my Norgewian heritage and have never seen the "completed" product nor tasted it so I hope that I done it right. I used my electric "SlapJack Cooker" (my 5 yr. old grandsons name for my large griddle) and a regular spatular and rolling pin. Being from the part of the country that I am (Texas) to me they resemable flour Tortilla. They are not very round but...... expericence must come along some where. Wanda Mobley

18. New Year Celebration [0.967568]
Happy New Year ! We have a 15 y.o. New Year's Eve tradition where several families meet around a bonfire at Lake Nessjxen in Eidskog parish. This year the bonfire is really huge, because it will be around -10/-15 F. A little bit north of us - still in Hedmark county - they expect the temperature will sink far below that. We chat and drink Juleglxgg - some bring with them their "moonshine". Most of these people are farmers. Then we gather at one of the farms and have dinner. Meat from the grouse, wild du

With aplogies! T'was the night before Christmas, And all through the house, Not a creature was stirring Except one little mouse. She scampered all over Both upstairs and down. She scampered all over In her ragged nightgown. She burst into the parlour And what did she see, But a mountain of presents And a glorious tree. But off in the corner On an old worn-out mat Were hundreds of crumbs Where the people had sat. Back in the nest she shouted with glee, 'Come brothers, sisters and cousins, Come with me
