If Oline was born in Minnesota, she would have been circa 8 years in 1880 (the first census after her birth and also searchable). The 1880 census showed only one Oline L
2. Re: Hartshorn [1]
Hartshorn is ammonium carbonate. You can get it at King Arthur Flour. I think you wanted to look up "hartshorn", not "salt of hartshorn". And yes, sodium chloride is plain table salt. http://www.kingarthurflour.com/ Technically, in chemistry, a whole bunch of things are salts -- it's a generic term. A salt is just a compound that is held together by electrical attraction rather than chemical bonding. (More than you wanted to know, I'm sure!) Now, doesn't that make you wonder about the *other* propert

4. Re: Olson/Danielson [1]
Gwen - The fold out charts of which I spoke are quite large; too large for my scanner. I am now wondering if Al has one of the later printings of the Slooper book which has reduced these big ancestry charts down to regular 8.5x11 page size. Maybe he, or someone else on the list with a Rosdail's book printed more recently, could try to scan this for you (actually 2 charts: Hetletveit & Hersdal/Nelson ancestors). Otherwise, a "plan B" would be to take digital photos and send that to as a large .jpg

10. Re: Heritage Quest - was 1930 Census at Ancestry [1]
Hi Connie, <> I find this interesting because several times the name I put in comes up with a whole list of that name in various states. Only a few of them will bring up the census image with the others being identified as "Not loaded yet". At any rate, I use both Ancestry & Heritage Quest Censuses, being mostly interested in the 1900 and 1910 indexes on Heritiage Quest. Daraleen
11. Re: Snorre [1]
Bob, you know there are so many editions of "Snorre" I just checked an antique shop and found that a Danish (leather cover) edition from 1948 was worth 850 kroner, and a 4 volume edition from 1914 was for sale at 1.500 kroner. So your 1900 edition, well kept and handled, is certainly more worth than Ingrid seems to think. I was reading an article about emigration and what they brought with them. One article talked about the food they prepared for the journey. And one thing was lefsa, along with the flatbread, butter, cheese, etc. And I wondered how they could keep lefsa for that long a period without it molding. Then I ran across all these non potato recipes and decided this must have been the kind of lefsa they made and took with them. I believe all those lefsa recipes are in the book "The last word on lefsa". If someon

22. Norway Day Festival 2004 In San Francisco [1]
Hi List! I just wanted to give an advance reminder of the Norway Day Festival on May 8-9, 2004 at Crissy Field in San Francisco. Some of us Listers like to meet with one another there so please put the date on your calendar. Perhaps we can do a Saturday AND a Sunday meeting if necessary. We usually collect in the Genealogy Center and then wander around. I will post several times between now and then as a reminder for all. We'll set up a more official time or times, the closer we get to May! Regards,

Dear Jim, First I have to correct my friend RD on the point about "pige". It is correct that a maid (servant girl) could be called a "pige". Back in the time we are talking about, an umarried woman would also be called a "pige" all her life, even if she lived to be 80. The real meaning of the word, however, is "young girl" or "young woman". The turningpoint between being called a "barn" and a "pige" was the age of confirmation, when children were supposed to be able to go out and work and earn their own wag

Hi Beverly, Here is the family leaving Trondheim, 16 May 1893. http://snipurl.com/3zwg You choose Year=1893 Last Name "begins with" rasm and choose all variations of Rasmussen. You are now down to 25 individuals. It was the Ole / Olaf that likely caused you problems. My guess is Cyrus and Grus are the same place, with bad spelling or transcription.
