1. Arveson Family Research [1]
Can anyone help me to research some details of my family in Norway. Here are some clues: 1. My G.Grandmother was originally Swedish but her family moved to Norway from Varmland, I think in about 1858. She gave her maiden name on various certificates as Eva Arveson and her father's name as Johannes Arveson. She often included the name "Beck" after these names. Could this have been the farm where the family lived in Norway? (Possibly somewhere near Drammen.) 2. We found a record of her marriage to my G.Grand

I agree with Bonnie. We cannot keep trying to stifle the conversation on this list. It is what makes it alive. I had a friend once who told me that any conversation she had that didn't revolve around Jesus and his teachings was a waste of time. Now you won't find many more ardent Christians than me, but life would be boring, even among my equally ardent Christian friends if all we talked about was Jesus and his teachings. We need to talk about our lives and events in the world and our kids and spouses and
14. SV: Am I Norwegian? [1]
Hi Tim! I made a simple query on the Norwegian search engine KVASIR. Your name gave no results, but a search for SELJELID, show that there is several persons in Norway with this name. I figure that in this context the G and the J are pronounced pretty similar and there might, for some kind of reason, have been a change. I have not been able to find out where Seljelid is, but if you think this might be a lead, I'm sure our fellow geneaologists can help you. Good luck! Martin Eidhammer ---------- > Fra

Dora and all, I believe the 1801 census can be found at www.uib.no/hi/1801page.html. I feel like I am in the Twilight Zone. People reply to my message before it appears in my mail box. PLEASE LET NEIL KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE THE LAST CHAPTER Here's the last 3 pages. We left Rasmus comparing Norwegian emigration to the Huguenots and Puritans. Of course there were economic reasons also, and the emigrants hoped to better their material as well as their religious conditions. It should also be remembered that there was a wide-spread feeling of suspicion and distrust among the common folk in Norway against the officeholding class. There were many unprincipled officials, who exacted exorbita

I must agree with the POSITIVE side to this discussion... It was informative and enlightening. It had me doing a bit of side-track research and thinking. I welcome a good topic. I can't speak for all persons involved, but my comments were not meant to be derogatory by no means. And I like to think that most people (especially Norske) have a thirst for the truth. And I for one know that my background is very "COLORFUL" and nothing to be ashamed of. Facts are facts. And if I by chance become offended by some

Thank-you very much Michael. The attachment you included was the best I've seen for explaining the pronunciations of vowels. I bought the Berlitz package (cassette and book) to teach myself Norwegian, but they assume the English speaker is British, not North American and the examples of pronunciations don't make any sense. I know, I know, the Berlitz package is not so great, but that was all the store had. I'm still looking for a good cassette package to learn the language. Some things are hard to import to
