Good Morning! In response to Elissa Z.'s message --the farm was there by the 1830s when my great grandfather was born at that very farm! Susan Budensiek susanb@conc.tds.net
2. Listowner Announcement [1]
Greetings to all The Givers and Seekers, When I started the list for Norway research, I made it very clear it was to be to exchange information on Norway genealogy, tips, information, surnames, farm names, history, even an occasional Ole and Lena joke. I have repeatedly asked members to put in their 2 cents worth. I explained that some were just beginners, even on computer and its a big confusing world in here. Please offer them help. You responded! Many others on this list are highly exper

5. Re: Donald W. Smith and Nan Smith [1]
Rhonda, I am interested in your Gunda Haugland. My grandfather was Albert Monson Haugland, (b. 1890, d. 1977) and I know next to nothing more about his paternal line. Is there any chance your Gunda Haugland might be related? Do you have any more information about her? Thanks. 9. Re: -sen vs. -son [1]
Must disagree with East West theory. I am a NIELSON. And I cringe to think of being anything other than Norweigian. In my genealogy research in Charleston, SC, looking through many immigration records I noticed many NielSENs from Denmark and Sweden. And SONs from Norway, and a few from Sweden and Scotland. I thought that throughout the history of Norway that many people moved due to hardships and famine... I may be wrong. And with all the moving around I can see why there would be changes in the spelling o
10. Getting started [1]
Hi fellow rooters! I have just finished rewriting my article "Getting started". I have added additional information on how to avoid some of the common stumbling blocks in Norwegian-American genealogy research. If you are just starting out you may find it useful: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/5100/na15.html On my web site you will also find a few other articles that I have written, including: Norwegian Naming Practices: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/5100/na12.html Norwegian Ki
11. Re: KITTILSEN--Bo, Telemark [1]
Hi Susan, Aside from looking in the online 1801 census, and searching the farm name in there archive, I would seek information local. The Federal Archive has Passsenger lists available for the sons, most likely. When you locate these you will see where they were from, and who was the closest relative there, and where exactly they were going, and to whom. I would look in the county court house where they lived also, for any Citizenship Papers, Declarations of Intent Papers these also give infor on place o

Hello, I have been researching the family tree for 22 years, and my 2nd Great-Grandparents were Norwegian. I invite you look at my website which I have just recently put together, and I am currently updating with more descendant details as time allows. My Norwegian ancestors resided mainly in the counties of Hedmark and Telemark County in Norway. Would love to exchange information with anyone who may have some common ancestors. Just to add to the township and range and sections discussion, most of the U.S. uses the Michigan Sectional Survey system, most all of the eastern states still use the Irregular survey system, also the eastern edge of Ohio and a part of Texas. May I recommend a real nice site to learn about the Sectional Survey system presented by the company I work for. http://www.sidwellco.com/ Cidney Engberg

20. ADM. AND GEOGRAPH. UNITS IN NORWAY [1]
Jean R. Legried wrote this in the ending of a message to Donald: >>>Gran is a parish in Hadeland prosti in Oppland fylke. "Prosti" is a"deanery" -- an eccleastical division of a fylke/county. Uderstanding these political and eccleastical divisions is confusing. Maybe one of the list members from Norway could give an explanation. This gives me an excuse to tell a little about the place on earth where I live. From my window I can contemplate the ROMSDAL landscape consisting of the wide ROMSDALS FJORD wi
21. Re: son vs sen? [1]
I was always told sen in Norway, son is Sweden; but don't be too sure........ Another thing to keep in mind when doing any genealogy research is the lousy spelling, both by record-keepers and individuals about their own names. My Jensen kin for example show up in various American records as Jenson, Gensen, Yinsen, Johnson, etc! I have noticed in some Norway parish records the parish clerks [including my gggg-uncle] were not consistent with spelling either. Another of my names is Nybro and it changes constan

23. FRICKSON [1]
Hi, I am new to this List, but am not new to Lists in general. My name is Sharon Buethner. As I am sure that all of you are, I am searching for my Norweigan ancestors. I have been doing genealogy for nearly 30 years, but mainly my German lines. I am only 2nd generation American on one line, 3rd on three others. I also trace my husbands family, which is also German. My G-Grandmother was known to me as Julia FRICKSON, born in WI 15 Dec 1854 to Ole FRICKSON (b. 12 Apr 1821 in Norway) and Bertha TH

Neil, keep posting your stories and letters to the list. They are great. I laughed and laughed at your humor. I also found myself enjoying my Norwegian-ness because of what you wrote--not that I have never enjoyed it before, but this hit at a gut level. Thank-you. 25. Neil's Little Page [1]
Hi all, I'm sure all of you have bookmarked my little page of general information that is posted in Norway and refer to it daily. They are doing some remodeling over there and have moved my page to www.sffarkiv.no/test/neil.htm, if anyone cares. It will probably get moved again sometime and I'll post its new location in case anyone wants to send a newbie there. Neil
