1. Re: Røros lookup, please [1]
Hi Lynell, My direct line is with Peder Jensen Villmann (b abt 1635, d. 1687), who was a brother to the Hans I was inquiring about. They were the sons of Jens Jonsen Villmann, who was the son of Jon Digre. Peder Jennsen had a son named Hans Pedersen (b. 1672, d.?) who moved to Holman, on the island of Smxla (as did 3 other siblings). Hans Pedersen had a son named Hans Hansen Roksveg (b. abt 1700, d. 1739). Hans Hansen Roksveg had a daughter Giertrud Hansdtr Roksveg who married my 4Great Gran
2. Translation please [1]
The following text is hand-written in my family's old Norweign bible. The script is very "flowery" and difficult to make out: I might be totally off the mark! Hvad gaber du efter din Fesfe feer duikke Narnet foran (or fovan?) Also, there is name written as "Julia Schalate". Could Schalate be Norwegian for Charlotte? Many thanks,

Its interesting to note that the heir not present would still inherit a certain amount,
4. Norwegian Ambassador to U.S. [1]
Hi everyone--One of the highlights of my trip to MN a couple of weeks ago, was meeting the Norwegian Ambassador, Knut Vollebfk and his wife Ellen Sofie. He spoke at a reception in their honor, at Bethany Lutheran College, in Mankato, and afterwards, I got to shake hands, talk about where my ancestors came from, with them, and have a snapshot taken of us together. The Sons of Norway Lodge from Mankato had arranged everything for their visit. The next day there was a Heritage Fair, and banquet at another coll

Hi Stephanie, You wrote: I am new at this For starters you should read Neil's "Newbie Notes" and John Follesdal's "Ancestors from Norway" - both accessible thru the Norway List website. Norwegian research can be both fun and frustrating, but you've come to the right place for help. The place names you give sound more like farm names to me than towns/parishes. If you know, for sure, who Peter & Ombjor's parents were, it would be helpful to have that information. If you know when they emigrated that

10. Family History Center in Salt Lake City [1]
Soon I will have the joy of going to SLC to spend 2-3 days doing research. Several questions come to mind, and I know many of you have done this so you could help. 1. What information should I have prepared and bring along so that I can make the best use of my time there? 2. What motels/hotels are within reasonable walking distance of Temple Square? 3. What is the formal name of the place I will be doing my searching, and where is it located in relationship to Temple Square? 4. How does one go about mak

Often a close analysis of the sponsors will provide insights into the family structure that is not revealed elsewhere. Jeff Svare

Thankyou to Olaf, Elin & Jeff for the info on Sm = Smaalene (or Smaalenene) = Ostfold I also have some questions re. occupations that I'm hoping someone can help me with: My ggf's occupation in the 1900 census (as transcribed in the Digitalarkivet) was "Kontorsvend" The closest word I could find was a "Kontorist" (office clerk). However, I know that when he came to America he was a baker, and also his occupation on the emmigration records was "Bagersvend" Also on the emmigration records, his wife's occupa

20. Re: Bakke Kirke in Sira, Vest-Agder [1]
Hi Joy, I believe that 3 or 4 members of the family are buried in the Bakke kirke cemetery. However, the people there were not able to find them. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it is entirely possible they were buried in that cemetery. Burial practices in most of Europe are different than in the US where we don't re-use burial spots. The burial spots have been leased for a specified number of years (often 20) after which the space can be leased to someone else if the lease isn't renewed.

I too have had a similar problem. I have been in hospital for three and 1/2 weeks and just came home on friday. Since being home have had phone calls from three people saying they had gotten an email from me and it had a virus. The only problem is I was as I say in hospital with infection in my hip that I had replaced in June, no one had keys to my place or access to my computer but people were receiving a email with virus from someone usuing my name. I had a friend who is a computer specialist come che
24. Norwegian forenames? [1]
Hi List, I'm new to the list, and to Norwegian research. After seeing this phrase in a previous message, > Nils Magnus Svanberg A ship's captain according to the Sveio bygdebok > which lists him as captain of a brig named the "Ora & Labora." The name "Ora" caught my eye. I have a couple of families with unusual forenames and/or middle names, and I am curious as to whether or not these occur as common forenames in Norway. I know the mother in family #1 was Norwegian (we'll get to her later), and
