WOW! Did we stir up a "hornets nest" with one little query! Wonderful! I continue to be amazed at the responses on this list. Just terrific. THanks to Jess,Joanne, and Eric, and others; most of us received a lot of clarification, that we didn't have before. I only had a cursory knowledge of these lines, but now know a whole lot more. I am so lucky to have a whole team of helpers, out there who back up my limited research, and help others out. Thanks to all, that was overwhelming and thrilling! Barb in BC.

While surfing the net this evening, I stumbled onto a site http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~vgdeagan/haxton.htm There is an entry for a Martha Haxton marrying Joseph Jess June 25, 1744. 8. [NS-L] Re: Surname - WILMOT [0.977843]
Hi I descend from the Wilmot's that originally settled in Mabou, that later moved to Inverness and Stellarton. I do have information on that line as well as the New Brunwick Wilmots. I believe that both families are connected, since my ancestors name (Asa Wilmot) is one that is used by the NB Wilmots, but have not been able to prove it yet, although according to family history, two brothers came one of them settled in Mabou, the other in New Brunwick, in 1790, however the families lost track of

I disagree with Trena's answer, in that I believe that it is a marine term related to steering the sailing ship. One either "comes about" by steering into the wind and going on another tack, or one steers away from the wind until the wind catches the sail from the other side and the sail swings, sometimes quite violently to the other side of the vessel. This is called a "jibe" sometimes spelt "gybe". A jiber, is a device used in larger vessels to assist the ship while making a jibe, allowing for the
