I wonder if they would let a group of volunteers come in a computerize
their records. It would be a good project for those living near the
cemetery. Of course, part of the deal would be the volunteers get to
put the info on line...wish I lived back there.

Does anyone have them? Looking for evidence of 1855 naturalizations for BERNARD and ANN MCMAHON KAVANAGH (living in Port Jefferson in 1880) or their presumed son CHARLES CAVANAUGH (living in New Windsor, NY in 1870 and 1880). Charles was one of my mother's grandfathers. Bernard and Ann (as well as 3-year-old Charles) MAY have come over on the ship EMPIRE STATE in 1850. The link between this Bernard and my Charles is tentative at this time.

First of all, I see that I had two numbered 42, should be 42 and 42a.
Then I had two numbered 43, should be 43 and 44. Sorry if this caused

Was wondering if anyone knows how I can narrow down the location....Can you tell which Catholic Parishes would be close from this info? Or can you tell me where I can find go to find out a likely parish for this Irish Catholic Family. Are there directories available for NYC for this time period? And if so, where would one find that

I don't know what the machine is but it is a viewer that you find in all
libraries. You put the film over a lens and with the aid of a light,
the picture is enlarged. You usually can rotate the lens to make the

Hello!
I'm hoping someone can help me. This isn't genealogy, though I
guess it's loosely connected in that I noticed these trees last week while I was
on my way to do genealogical research in NYC. While I was on the train from
Philadelphia through New Jersey & into NYC I kept seeing trees with lots of
purplish flowers growing all over. Does anyone know what they are? I know there
are a lot of native New Yorkers on this list so I thought I would try asking.

There was a program in the late 1700s to encourage linen production in
Ireland, and therefore the growing of flax. If you grew so many acres (or
whatever measurement was used) you were entitled to a spinning wheel, or
maybe more than one, and the names of the people who were given the spinning
wheels were recorded in a book.

Dear Jamie,
After reading your answer to Maria I have an ominous feeling that resting
place of my great-grandfather may be lost now also. All of my NY Irish relatives,
save one in her late 80s, are now gone so I may never find him.

Depends on how you define 'o.k.'....just busy and not thinking when doing things that I do often...my mail program is such that when I type 'NY, NYNewYork comes up and if I don't watch and type 'I' for NYIrish, it goes to the wrong list. Sometimes when I am in a hurry, it gets by me. Lately they have been getting a lot of Irish mail and I am waiting for someone to ask why :-)
