Hello Listers,
I want to thank Kevin for sharing info. at his web site re. Andersonville
Prison etc. and for his volunteer work there. I just finished reading a book
by Robert Knox Sneden, "Eye of the Storm, a Civil War Odyssey", edited by
Charles F. Bryan Jr., and Nelson D. Lankford, 2000. This book is an edited
version of an actual Civil War diary written by Mr. Sneden. Very
interesting. I recomend it to all who are researching Civil War history,
especially those of you who are researching New

I got this newsclip from my Dad, who still lives in Sidney.
He knows how much time I spend online hunting for "treasures" . He and
Shirley hope that someone on one of the maillists I belong to may recognize
the name of an ancestor and be able to fill in the blanks in the service
records of these veterans. (This is not the entire article..only the names
of the individuals mentioned.)

I haven't heard of bounties being given to POWs but bounties are frequently
shown on the soldier's military service record, which you can get from the
National Archives and Records Administration. Bounties were frequently
given for enlistments and reenlistments and were usually paid in
installments. The amount of the bounty varied depending upon how much the
state needed to offer in order to fulfill its quota. Unlike previous wars,
bounty land was not given to Civil War soldiers by the Federal Government
Does anyone know if there was a bounty given by the government for being a
prisoner of war during the Civil War? My relative was only a prisoner of war
for five days from March 25, 1865, to March 30, 1865, but I was wondering if
there such a thing as a bounty granted? Thanks for any information that you
might be able to provide.

Hi Ted,
Im looking for information on origins of the Von Beck Rifles, 102d NYSV
who fought at Culps Hill. I believe the unit was named, after George F.
von Beck of Rondout (Kingston) NY. The information I have prior to the
Civil war is that about 1850 in Rondout, New York, George von Beck
organized the Harrison Guards and was elected captain of the company,
provided a drill room at his own expense, and instructed the unit in
manual of arms and military discipline. (He had been an Ordnance Office
I am trying to figure out how my Grogan ancestors ended up in Petersburgh,
NY in
1790. I have amassed a lot of paper from the NARA of pay envelopes and a
Bounty land Warrant Record card.
Can anyone help me through this mess and give me some pointers?
I also have a guy in the war of 1812.
I have a theory that the Grogan I have paperwork for was our original
Grogan and
somehow after the war he got land up in Petersburgh which is right on the
NY Mass VT
border. He was in the 2nd regiment of the NY Contine
You can get military service records from the National Archives and Records

Unfortunately, most the personnel records for 20th century soldiers were
destroyed in a 1973 fire but some information might be available from other
records.

Hi,
I'm new to the list,
Hi,
I'm new to the list, and I am not sure what info is necessary - however,
all I know is that in the 1900 federal NY census, in Auburn NY, George
CHURCH was listed as a soldier. He was born in 1877 in RI and moved to NY
around 1899. In the 1909 Auburn directory, it said that George removed to
South America. Now, I have researched some conflicts that were going on at
the time, and I found that troops were sent in to Nicaragua in 1909.
How does one find info on line for veterans of the Spanish America
List,
Could anyone offer suggestions on records to search for information on a
British military officer with connection to Haarlem Heights NY?
I found a reference to his wife's death notice online in a NY marriages
and deaths search. She died in 1815 in Haarlem Heights, NY. The notice is
from The New York Weekly Museum, also known as the Impartial Gazeteer and
Saturday Evening Post, and Ladies' Weekly Museum, printed in NY 1799-1817.
I am not experienced with researching a British Military officer in th
Would anyone know where I can find more about General Tupper and his brigade

men from VT and New York?
Thanks,
This is for a person who is visiting from Colorado. Any place I could look
that you might suggest would be helpful.

I have purchased the Civil War discharge papers of William STROMBERG,
Private, Cowatchs Co. E, 54th New York Volunteers. He enlisted 4 Oct
1861, discharged 14 May 1862. I got this at auction in Indiana, and
would like to get back to the family for the $40 purchase price plus
actual postage costs.

Seeking information on George and Stephen Klinck and their service in the
Civil War.
George was in the NY 3rd Calvary, Heavy Artillery. Stephen was in the 114th
NY Volunteers. Haven't been able to find out a lot, so anything would be
helpful.
Thanks,
Georgiana Abbott Norris
Good Morning: Would you please see if you have anything on a Mortimer Many?
He was in the 36th and 56th NY during the Civil War.. Thank You

I would like to welcome those of you new to this site and tell you there
are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I,
myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in
Andersonville Georgia. Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am
willing to do what I can.
My sources are the following.......
There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by
Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list
which
