I assume that the second service was not in a militia unit, if so you can
get his service record from NARA:

If you look at a map of northeastern New York you'll see that Champlain is
at the north end of Lake Champlain on near the Canadian border while
Ticonderoga is at the southern end at the carry between Champlain and Lake
George. It seems that it would have been easy to transport the body by boat
along the lake.

I am trying to locate a John Hmura born abt 1896 and lived in Monessen PA,
married to Helen Hmura who Andy O Hmura in 1916.
Is there anywhere I can look besides Ancestry.com or Military.com
I have found a possible military draft card for a John Chmura, which I
believe says Monessen as city. But nothing else except a family last name of
Shemara in Ellsworth, PA in the 1930 census.
Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance

The Civil War service records on www.civilwardata.com and the Civil War
pension index on www.ancestry.com both list him as Henry Sheller. It's
quite possible that he used both names.
There's a Henry Linneman, age 12, listed in NY City in 1860. It's possible
that he enlisted under the alias of Henry Sheller because he was under age.
The pension file from NARA would likely have an explanation of the alias if
indeed they were the same person.

Hello All,
I am trying to track down any information available about an ancestor, Hiram Hawkins. His name appears in my Great Aunts obituary as follows:
"Clara Hawkins Brennan, daughter of Catherine and Albert Hawkins, was born in the town of Winfield, Sauk County, Oct. 22, 1875. She was a direct decendant of Nataniel Dickinson M.D. of the Revolutionary War and Hiram Hawkins of the War of 1812."
Hiram's son David married Laura Dickinson, daughter of Nationel Dickinson M.D. in Cambridge Vermont in 1805. Thei

There was a Hiram Hawkins who served in the War of 1812 from South Carolina,
could he have come from there?
Hiram would have been fairly old to be a soldier in the War of 1812 if he
had a son who was married in 1805. He might have been in a state militia
unit and seen limited action.
The NY State Archives will search War of 1812 militia payroll records and

I suspect that it may mean that one had paid the other to replace him for
the draft in the Civil War starting in 1863.
