The county clerks wouldn't have discharge papers. You didn't say when your
uncle was in the military. A large percentage of the WWI and WWII records
were destroyed in a fire at the records center but part of the information
can be reconstructed from other records. See the National Archives and
Records Administration site:

I am the granddaughter of Emile Victor L'hernault. He and his brothers
fought in WWI. I am looking for information on Military records. I have
contacted the Army and the Navy. They say that there aren't any records.
Thank you for any suggestions.
Robert's dilemma is a common one and it will get worse as the World War II
vets pass away. I urge all of you who have family members that served in
the Army and/or Air Force during World War II and thereafter before 1950 to
copy all the military records that you can find. Make both paper and
computer copies. Scan them into the computer even if they are hard to read.
Copy them in JPEG format like you would a photo, do not compress and save
them in JPEG format. You will be able to read them with the zoom f
I will be traveling around the Southwest in my motor home for about a
month so I will be "unsubscribing" in just a few minutes.
I"ve been on the list since mid September and have learned a great deal
about NYC. Westchester County and The military from those areas that I
never knew before.
Also it's been fun.
The helpful spirit of all the veterans on the list is remarkable. No
matter what the question, some one (or many) will respond with an answer
or a hint ornhow the answer to the question might be fou

CAROLINA. 1917. If anyone can give me any information i will be

I am trying to find some background on my great-grandfather, William Thomas
Charity who emigrated to Plattsburg from England somewhere around 1870.
Family history has it that he served in the British Army, possibly the 58th
Rutlandshire, and married an Irish woman Mary E. (surname unkown). Any
information would be gratefully appreciated.

You might want to try a websearch on *Camp* Wadsworth, Spartansburg,
*South* Carolina too. In 1917 this was a huge training area. I
haven't got the particulars with me, but at least the 27th Division
went there for training.
Also, if the 51st Pioneers was a pre-Sept/Oct designation, it might
have changed when the Guard was 'nationalized'.
To illustrate how things changed in 1917;
My grandfather joined the 10th NYNG in 1917. At some point he was
transferred to the 7th NYNG to fill their ranks before
Check with your town clerk also. I live in a small town in Connecticut,
where veterans are allowed certain tax waivers if they produce their
discharge papers. These papers are all on file and accessible to
anyone.

My discharge papers were recorded in Westchester County.
I was given a wallet size card on which was noted the record number and
date of recording.
At top center was a representation of the "Ruptured Duck" the pin given
out when a person was discharged.
Mine is still around some where.
Similar cards might be in the effects of WWII veterans who have passed
on.

Well the fact is that "SOME" Military Discharge Papers are filed at some
County Clerk's Offices, "IF" the veteran filed them as suggested at
discharge. I have used them for finding information on modern genealogical
research quests at several different county clerks offices in NYS. They are
available for public access. The trick is to locate the proper county that
they are filed in. It is usually found in the county that the veteran's
family lived in at the time of his/her discharge. The form to ask fo
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have my gg-grandfathers Civil war discharge paper. It states that Hugh McGuire
was a private of 1st Lieut. J ( N )? Sunderland, Company G, 12th Regiment of " Veteran Reserve Corps Volunteers. Enlisted Sept. 3, 1862, ( 21 years old ), discharged, Feb. 15,1865. I've looked around and can't find anything on the 12th Regiment of "Veteran Reserve Corps Volunteers, Company G". Maybe someone knows something about this regiment.
Can anyone help me? I've lost my Grt, Grt, Grt Grandfather. The only
mention I find of him is his name, Aden Jacobs appearing in Warren's
Regiment, N.Y. Militia in the War of 1812. Does anyone have knowledge of
Warren's Regiment? When and where formed, etc.? Any help greatly
appreciated.
Lou Jacobs

Hello, and Happy new year!
Does anyone have info on the activities of STEPHEN HOOPER and JOHN
CONKLIN, who were spies for the British during the American Revolution?
I am most interested in Hooper.
Thanks!

The 51st Pioneer Infantry was attached to the 4th Corps which also
included the 1st, 3rd and 4th Divisions. You might be able to find more
information on the 51st in a unit history of one of the above mentioned
Divisions.

After my 18 December posting on recording of my discharge papers with the
Westchester County Records I decided to open the safety deposit box and
refresh my memory.
I found that the papers bore a stamp showing they had been recorded
shortly after I was released from active duty in late 1945.
Then I noticed they also had a stamp that they been recorded with the
Santa Clara (California) County Records in March 1957. This shortly
after I had relocated there after being released from active duty during
