3. [NYALBANY] Bath-on-the-Hudson [1]
Lyn, The city of Rennselaer formed in 1897 from Bath-on-the-Hudson (village) and Greenbush (village). Shortly before that, Greenbush annexed East Albany (hamlet) which was to its south. Bath became the northern end of Rensselaer. The Albany city directories included these localities even though they were across the Hudson River from Albany and in Rensselaer Co. In like manner, the Troy directories included localities across the Hudson from it in Albany Co. (Cohoes, Green Island and West Troy. The vill
4. Re: [NYALBANY] Nancy Quinn [1]
Hi Robert, Glad to help. Did a bit more looking. They didn't appear on the 1915 state census index for the city of Albany(on ancestry.com), so they may have died or moved out of the city proper. Neither appeared as heads of families on the 1910 index, unless the surname was badly misspelled. They could have been dead by then, moved from Albany, or at least one have them could have been living with one of their children. If they did die beteen 1900 and 1910, you would only have to look at the years in tha
5. [NYALBANY] Rensselaer Co. NY, Naturalizations [1]
First of all, I see that I had two numbered 42, should be 42 and 42a. Then I had two numbered 43, should be 43 and 44. Sorry if this caused any confusion, I am out of practice...but getting into the groove again pretty quickly. I now have years Aug 1853 through Dec 1856 on line and Oct 16 to Dec 1884 on line. You can access them from the URS under my name, under New York State, click on Troy, they are under Naturalizations. I also have them on the Rensselaer County website at: http://www.rootsweb.

Donna, thanks for the info. He died in Oklahoma in 1899. Oklahoma didn't start keeping records until 1908 (became a state in 1907). 9. [NYALBANY] Census indexes on genealogy.com and heritage quest [1]
Hi, I would like to know what the citation for the census means on both genealogy.com and heritage quest - they do not relate to the actual census as far as I can see. ex: Book 1 page 7 for the 1900 census - the actual census has 3 ED's for that place and each of them have sheets 7A & 7B. Starting in 1900 the census reels are cataloged by ED and sheet numbers so where did they get their listings and how does one find the person? 10. RE: [NYALBANY] Land question [1]
Hi Marita, An indenture was originally two copies of the same document written on the same sheet of paper. It was torn in half to create two distinct copies. Later, to assure that the terms of the agreement had not been altered unilaterally , the two documents could be compared to see that the ragged tear line, or indenture, matched up. The name stuck for later transactions. Your third cousin is correct that many lands in New York fell under the manorial system wherein certain landholders (patroons) held
11. [NYALBANY] indentures in patroon system [1]
Marita- Even though the legislature banned the "perpetual lease" system, those indentures written and signed in earlier years were still legal. When the new law was written, the lands were NOT given over free and clear to those who held early leases (indentures). New sales after the date of the new law were "final" but earlier ones were still "perpetual". 2000 court cases found all the early perpetual leases were legal. Janet

15. [NYALBANY] Re: census on genealogy.com [1]
I'm not sure about genealogy.com indexing methods but I do know the indexing methods for the ancestry.com and heritage quest online censuses leave a lot to be desired, i.e. errors! I couldn't find my Thomas HEFFERNAN family in Rochester,NY in 1920 Census. It took me a few months to figure out that maybe the ancestry.com indexer misspelled the name. Sure enough after a few tries I used HOFFERMAN! It worked and I found my family. I also tried looking for the same HEFFERNAN family in Heritage Quest online.

18. [NYALBANY] Land question [1]
My 3rd cousin Dudley Richards has posed a good question, and I hope someone out there can help with the answer. I sent him a copy of the Index to the Public Records of the County of Albany, State of New York 1630-1894 Grantees - Vol IV Douner through Fynhout. LDS Film #0463547 In it I found several listings of Grantee and Grantor transactions for James Furman, Jr and others. He was puzzled because some of the deeds I found were transacted in 1830-1833, 1855 but not recorded until 1878.

I believe the buildings on the Shaker Flower Farm are also part of the Shaker community. There are at least 2 brick buildings and possibly a third.
20. Re: [NYALBANY] Walter Plue of Albany [1]
If you order records from the SSA, the person must be deceased. But, since the SSDI is the death index, you won't have to prove anything. Do you have to provide proof of death? My family knows next to nothing about any of the relatives so I'm having a hard time tracking down anything. 25. [NYALBANY] Castle Island [1]
The brief history of the van Der Hoeven family in from Provost's 'Early settlers of Bushwick' contains a reference to the will of Geertje van Fulpen (Van Der Hoeven) made at Albany in December 1684. In the will she names four of her children Neeltje, Elizabeth (Caljer) Cornelius and Jan and mentions that her two daughters were living with her in her house ' "situate opposite the island occupied by Mr Marte Gertzen". Provost suggests that this is a reference to Martin Gerritzen, so this is probably C
