I'm trying to find a marriage certificate for Ambrose R. WILLIAMS and Malissa COATS. They were married in Alfred, New York in 1860. Do I write to the county for this record or do I write to the town clerk. Does anyone on the list know how much they charge and are there records available for this time period? Thank you.

Most likely there is not a marriage certificate as Allegany county did not
start recording marriages until the early 1900s. Your best source would be
any church records in Alfred at that time. Some church records have been
microfilmed by the Family History Library -- check their catalog at
www.familysearch.org. You could also check newspapers, some which are
microfilmed and available through ILL to your public library from the NY
State library. There is a link under the newspaper section on the Allegany
