2. [NYC] Huelsman/Hülsmann [1]
I'm researching members of the Huelsman/H|lsmann family who left Germany during ca. 1880-1915 from the Harz region (St. Andreasberg?) and settled in the New York City area. They operated a bakery in the Richmond Hill section of Queens (at 3500 Jamaica Ave at the corner of Johnson Ave.) just prior to WWI. (I could locate Jamaica Ave. on a map, but not Johnson Ave.) My greatr-grandfather's nephew, Erich Huelsman/H|lsmann, was working in the bakery. F. Huelsman is listed on old stationery as the proprietor. Th

In a message dated 98-07-05 17:03:09 EDT, you write: << Please, when trying to help "newbies" don't forget to mention the Soundex cards...>> Good point Arlene. On the other hand, I know that the Soundex system is fully explained on the NARA web site (with information on which censi have been soundex indexed.) Got caught in the perpetual struggle between being concise while still trying to pass on enough information without being overwhelming. Tracy Lewis Anchorage, AK
4. [NYC] Re: Coat of Arms book [0.973993]
This might help you. Check out the book called "Heraldry - A Pictorial Archive for Artists & Designers" by Arthur Charles Fox-Davies, published 1991, Dover Publications, Inc., ISBN # 0-486-26906, $14.95. It contains over 1,000 copyright-free clip-art images. It is NOT indexed; you will have to look through the whole book for whatever name you want. Many are in black and white, but some are in color. You could always hand-color them. Dover books can usually be found at art stores. Barnes & Noble als
5. [NYC] Looking for a Church on E 117th Street [0.973993]
Hello list, My grandfather's brother was Rev Francis J O'Neil. I have not been able to locate his church. On his mother's death certificate he listed his address as 113 East 117th Street. Can anyone tell me if there is a Catholic Church at or near that address, and any particulars? Thanks! Mary K
6. Re: [NYC] 241 Goreck St., Manh? [0.973993]
I found a Goerck St in the lower East side of Manhattan. Parallel streets are: Mangin St [which is 2 blocks from the East River] Goerck St Lewis St Cannon St Columbia St Sheriff St Some East West streets that cross the above streets: Riverton St Dalancey St Grand St This should help you find it on a good street map. In 1890 it was in Sixth Assembly District. The 1890 Police census for that area is on FHC tape # 1,304,785 Look at item 13 on the tape first, if the house numbers on Goerck St are higher tha

I went into Manhattan last week expressly to microfilm some documents, and found that the self-service printers were taped over, and not to be used. Grace Charles Sullivan wrote: > Whoops! 10. [NYC] Windows 98 and genealogy records [0.973993]
Hello, You are having the problem I was worried I would have when I installed W98. Not being able to see the "D" drive. I had been having trouble with my computer at the time I was ready to install W98. There was always one device missing or listed as something inferring it was not functional anymore. I took my computer into a shop and we reinstalled W95 version B. Then it worked just fine. I got home and installed W98 without any problem and both drives and zip drive showed up just fine. I wish I cou

13. Re: [NYC] NY state military census [0.973993]
I tried to respond to this person but her address bounced. -- My gf carried a "draft card" which really wasn't. He was too old. It seems that there was some kind of census of ALL males who MIGHT be called if the state didn't have sufficient numbers of young males. I have a suggestion and would like your opinions posted. When I get my E-Mail 75% of the mailing list stuff (not Spam) are replies to specific , personal questions. IE: "Is 495 E.13 St still there?" "Hanora McCarthy in Brooklyn" My suggestion is to reply to general questions that are of help to everybody to the list, BUT to E-Mail your replies to specific situation or family related questions directly to the poster. We have all seen the initial post to determine our replies. Have been doing that for over
23. Re: [NYC] marriage license [0.973993]
Hi-- Judi, in NY State, marriage license applications are not made at courts, but at Town Clerks' offices. In New York City, they are made at County (Borough) Clerks' offices. I'm not positive, but I think that that's where you'd have to seek the old ones on file, too. It is true that they contain quite a bit of information, such as previous marriages, parents' names.
