1. [NYC] Fort Hamilton - 1870 - P.68 [1]
Hi everyone, here is page 68 of the 1870 Federal census for New Utrecht, Kings County. Several of these are officers of Fort Hamilton. Once again, question marks indicate my (extreme!!) difficulty in reading this census takers quite ornate handwriting. 1ST NAME SURNAME AGE OCCUPATION BORN IN Robert HALL 42 Blank Scotland Cicilia HALL illegible Ohio Adele HALL 11 Texas Cicilia HALL 9 Texas Isreal (?) 2. [NYC] Petrus W. Ostrander [1]
I was at the National Archives yesterday and spent some time reading the entire pension file of Revolutionary War soldier, Petrus W. Ostrander. This was about 50+ plus pages, much longer than the National Archives version that they mailed me a few years ago. His wife was Catherine Parcells. They were married at Esopus about 1790 and about 1836, her address is on Perry Street, New York City and about 1855, her address is Greenpoint (Brooklyn). In the Bounty Claim request (1855) she says that she reside

4. [NYC] Fort Hamilton-1870-p.74 [1]
Hi everyone, Here is page 74 of the 1870 federal census for New Utrecht, Kings County. These are all Privates at Fort Hamilton. BTW, I will be sending to both NYC roots and Brooklyn roots the entire 1870 federal census for New Utrecht. It is 83 pages and will take about 4 months to complete. As I send it Nancy will be posting it to her web site. The only fields I will be able to post are name, age, occupation, born in, and value of real estate. If you find someone you are searching listed you can then
5. Re: [NYC] Suicide...Coroner's Inquest??? [1]
Coroners' Inquisitions have been microfilmed by the LDS. Check the Locality Catalog under "NEW YORK, NEW YORK (CITY) - VITAL RECORDS". Most of 1898, through November, appears to be included on FHL #1376121. I don't see the end of 1998 listed. You may or may not find a record. If there was any suspicion of foul play and a Coroner's Jury was convened, there would be a record. Otherwise the Coroner might just personally make a determination and sign off on the death certificate. Check it out - you never c

7. Re: [NYC] SOUNDEX, how do I believe these soundex machines? [1]
Believe the machine! When c is followed by h, it is considered "silent" - that is, is doesn't count. It is the same as if the name is Shantz. The "h" is not coded. Therefore, the code is S532. N=5 T=3 Z=2 -- Dick Malkin Natick, MA ==========
8. [NYC] OLSSEN; New York City and NJ [1]
Seeking infirmation on the OLSSEN family of New York City, starting around 1800-1810 with the births of Richard and Edward, who I believe were brothers. Richard OLSSEN was born about 1802 and died 1860. Lived in NY City. Had children Mary, Richard, William, James, and Emma. James was my g-g-grandfather and was killed in the Civil War in 1862 at Malvern Hill. William and Richard also served and survived. Less is known about Edward, but he had a daughter, Mary E, and a son, also Edward, who served in the Ci

10. Re: [NYC] Re: Wall of Honor [1]
If you contact the Ellis Island Wall of Honor project (which you can do by email), THEY will forward your request for information on to the party who paid for the plaque. Then it's up that that person to contact you if THEY wish to do so. The project folks won't do any more than that. Ricki Z. 11. [NYC] Rootsweb Obituary List [1]
Hi NYC-Roots List! I recently came across a website at Rootsweb where individuals have volunteered to transcribe the obituaries from their local newspapers. You can subscribe to the list and search for relatively new obits around the world. However, only the volunteers can request more than the one line of information as it is posted. Go see if your paper is being transcribed. If not, volunteer to do it -- takes about 20 mins a day. You can download a program written by Mike Rice that makes data entry e

14. Re: [NYC] Re: NYC-ROOTS-D Digest V99 #75 [1]
To Mike and List, I sent for my father's WWII records which were burned in the 1973 fire....what I received from them was a computerized printout of a POSSIBLE MATCH for my father....and they acquired this record from medical records that must've been kept elsewhere. It just so happens, that I knew little but just enough about my father's military service to know that they had the right man. The record didn't tell me much but it did tell me exactly what I wanted to know which was what date he retu

23. Re: [NYC] Ursuline Academy [1]
There was an Ursuline convent and school in the East Morrisania section of the Bronx at Westchester Avenue and Cauldwell Avenue from about 1850 to 1891.The site is now occupied by a housing project, St. Mary's Park Houses. The school relocated in 1892 to Marion Avenue and Bedford Park Boulevard in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx near Fordham University. At that time, it was known as the Ursuline Academy. My 1993 map of the Bronx shows the Ursuline Academy at this location, but the yellow pages
