4. [NYC] Re: US censuses on CD [1]
Hi Floreda, I've had great success ordering CDs of NY censuses from Heritage Quest. Wish I had found them before I ordered one a couple of years ago from AllCensus, where they were around $100 each! Heritage Quest's url is http://www.heritagequest.com/ Have fun. They run about $20 each, and if you join up they are discounted a bit. They also have a new version of the 1870 NYC Census index which is extraordinary. Mary Kifissia, Greece > There appear to be a number of companies selling Federal > Censu

I believe this area might be in Oneida County. See Mohawk Valley Online at: http://www.mvsearch.com/ Websters Geographic Dictionary describes the Mohawk River as being the largest tributary of the Hudson, in East central NY, formed by the junction of the east and west branches in Oneida co. You might explore the US GenWeb for Oneida County at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyoneida/ There were references there to "Mohawk Valley." --Noelle, in Ohio At 03:59 PM 10/7/00 EDT, NanaAnne@aol.com wrote: >Hi from

10. [NYC] 1888 Deaths [1]
There has been postings of 1888 deaths, but I seemed to have missed the "M's" around Mueller. My gf died in the spring of 1888, just after the blizzard and I would like very much to find his death certificate. My mother was born after his death. Can anyone tell me where the 1888 death list came from? Is it available to those living outside of NYC? cdcpcsm
11. Re: [NYC] How to post an effective query [1]
Holly, I applaud your effort. It should be posted about once per month for all the newbies (I was one a year ago, so I know how clueless one can be!). I'd add one more suggestion: If you see someone else request help (say, an obit lookup), don't assume that that is a reasonable request and that they actually GOT a lookup. If you do make a request and don't get help, it doesn't mean people are unhelpful - it might just be one of those things you have to do yourself. If you watch the list for a few d

13. Re: [NYC] I need help [1]
I called the Manhasset Office and a very kind soul is going to research for me where the death certificate may be and will also find out if I can get it. She offered an alternative and that is to send the death certificate or a letter to Flushing Cemetery directly. That particular office does not have e-mail. I also learned that there are many, many places where the certificate might be. It all depends on where he actually died...it seems for example that Mineola Hospital, LI Jewish, Northshore etc are

Hi, List. I hope someone can help me. Where can I locate the enumeration districts for these areas in Brooklyn, NY: 167 50th Street (1902); 164 55th Street (1903); 1002 Lafayette Ave. (1904) and 187 Conover Street (1880). 17. Re: [NYC] Fw: Death Certs 1860's [1]
What I found in an 1864 Manhattan death register was Date of Death, Name, Age (y/m/d), Residence (Street & House #), Place of Birth (just State or foreign country), Disease, Cemetery, Undertaker (often not filled in), Occupation (almost never filled in), and Attending Physician. An 1856 death register has identical columns except no Undertaker nor Physician, but has a (rarely filled-in) column for "Remarks". After 1855 when Castle Garden (in Battery Park, at the lower tip of Manhattan) opened as an immigrant station, the ships would either have to pull up there or the passengers would have to be landed in smaller boats. An article in the 23 Dec 1866 issue of the New York Times (page 8) describes the experience of an English immigrant aboard the 300-passenger ship SCOTLAND. It implies that the immigrants were landed via a steam-tug. Prior to 1855 the ships just docked at the piers on the East and Hudson (Nor

Yes, that does appear to be the case. If you search on just "1900" you get a zillion entries, but with either "1901" or "1902" all you get are the few entries where the certificate _number_ is one of these. I believe Ancestry purchases or licenses their databases from others, and many do not appear to be complete. I bought their Civil War index on CD a while back, which was supposed to include all of NY State as transcribed from the National Archives microfilms. However I found no entries whatsover from
