1. [NYDELAWA-L] New Kingston 1977 [1]
I have 2 photos taken by my grandfather. The caption on the outside of the envelope says "The whoop-de-do in New Kingston August 1977". The photos are of 4 people and a dog. My grandmother is one, there is an older man, maybe 60-70 years old a young woman and a man maybe 40ish. link is as follows to my ofoto album for Delaware County photos. http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?m=55277835103.75651473903&n=1596305143 Anyone recognize them? 2. Re: [NYDELAWA-L] cows [1]
In the time I was growing up (1940's) there seemed to be about equal numbers of dairys in the Walton area of Holsteins and Jersey/Guernseys. The "joke" among the dairymen was that If you milked a Holstein and dropped a silver dollar into the bucket you could see it at the bottom, However if you milked a Jersey into the bucket, you wouldn't even cover the dollar. 3. [NYDELAWA-L] Old School Baptist Church [1]
Hi All, Would anyone happen to have any knowledge of a church in the Margaretville/New Kingston area known as Old School Baptist?? Possibly even in Roxbury or Halcottsville. My ancestor, Solomon Beeman, was believed to have been "Old School Baptist" around mid-1800's. Would appreciate any knowledge of this church, and if there are any church records available. Thanks for any help. Marge
4. [NYDELAWA-L] Margaritville Seminary [1]
Hi to all. I am new to this list. I blundered into the Delaware County, NY Genealogy and History Site while looking for information about the Margaretville Seminary where my great great grandfather--Gurdon B. Crippen--was either a student or a teacher (not sure which) in 1853 and possibly into 1854. I have recently received an old note book from my half brother which he received from Mom at some time in the past. The notebook mostly contains articles which my gg grandfather transcribed for use in the "Stude
5. [NYDELAWA-L] Robert Steele to Delaware Co from Armagh, IRE [1]
A friend shared the following URL's with me for the reference to Delaware County and the ship Stafford that his Gaddis relatives came over on. We've been trying to find a connection between our two Gaddis lines, but been unsuccessful so far. Both of our lines came in 1800/1801 and supposedly each with two brothers and a sister. We have many common names between our two lines and many common locations throughout the U.S. as the years go on. Would be interested in hearing from anyone about the ship S
6. [NYDELAWA-L] Unknowns photo from Walton [1]
Recently purchased a portrait of an unknown couple possibly from Walton. This portrait was taken at Kinch Studio, Walton, N.Y. and was possibly taken in early to mid 1900's by the man's suit. That is my guess anyhow. If anyone can identify as their ancestor's please contact me, more information on the site below. Portrait can be seen: http://www.geocities.com/sanford_gen/unknown.html Kind regards, Tamara Sanford "Genealogy is like pla
7. Re: [NYDELAWA-L] Not really genealogy: Delaware County cows [1]
My Scottish grandfather had Ayrshires, as I presume my greatgrandfather did. These are red and white with distinctive curving horns, a Scottish breed. Many of the Delaware settlers were Scots and probably favored a Scottish breed. 8. RE: [NYDELAWA-L] Margaritville Seminary [1]
I could certainly be wrong but the seminaries that I'm familiar with appear to have been private institutions. The description of the Margaritville Seminary below also makes it sound like a private facility. The Common School District would have been a public school. Public secondary schools probably weren't very common in those days, it wasn't until the 20th century that high school education became the norm. -----Original Message----- From: Timothy Tryon [mailto:tet3@pacbell.net] Sent: Friday, June 06

10. [NYDELAWA-L] Not really genealogy: Delaware County cows [1]
Forgive this somewhat off-topic question, but this is where people will know the answer: For a model diorama of parts of Delaware County, circa 1920, that we're building for the Erpf Gallery, we obviously need to include a couple of herds of dairy cows, and we're completely inexpert on the subject of cattle breeds. In particular, not knowing anything about breeds, weren't most of the cows in that era brown, as opposed to the black & white ones that now seem to make up most of the local herds? Thanks Steve
11. [NYDELAWA-L] Old Union Church Cemetery [1]
Virginia: Union Church Cemetery is located on Union Church Road, off Route 357 near 'East Sidney'. The church is gone, but it is a well-maintained little cemetery. There are a few Cuyles buried there. Judy Virginia Leighty wrote: I have a John Stone 1811 - 1881, reportedly buried in "Old Union Church Cemetery", Sidney. 14. [NYDELAWA-L] Reply to Evelyn Boyles [1]
I'm afraid I have no documentation on Gurdon's parents. There is a Roots Web family tree that shows his father as Gurdin Crippen bc 1800, but I have no evidence for that data at this time. I am leaving tomorrow on a research trip for my Tryon family history. When I get back I will be corresponding with a cousin who has more on the Crippens than I do. If I learn anything more I'll let you know. Tim
15. [NYDELAWA-L] Simon Mickel/Michel Sr. [1]
I have had this thorn in my side for years now. Keep running into some folks who say that Simon Mickel b. abt 1750 + - was born in Germany. made a recient visit to Cooperstown, Otsego Co. and found out where they were getting this info.. According to a Biographical Review of leading citizens of Otesgo Co. 1893 It says that Simon Mickel who lived Delaware Co. came to the U.S. when quite young and settled in Davenport where he became quite prominent and a successful farmer. He was married to a Mari

I agree with you in that there weren't so many Holsteins around then; my father had mainly Guernseys as did most of our neighbors. Some folks included a few Jerseys as they are noted for having a higher fat content to their milk. Sometimes your paycheck depended on keeping the fat content up. I'm speaking for the old Union Grove area. Evelyn

18. [NYDELAWA-L] David WHITE/Jane Vanvalkenburg [1]
A cousin just sent me an obituary for David WHITE who was born in Roxbury Twp., Delaware Co on July 1, 1803. It states that he married Miss Jane Vanvalkenburg in 1827. I presume that they were married in either Delaware or Greene County. In the 1830 Census, I found them listed in the Lexington, Greene Co., Census. Any info on this line would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Dorothy Holgate

20. [NYDELAWA-L] Peleg BALLARD family [1]
I am looking for info on Benjamin BALLARD, son of Peleg and Martha (HAYNES) BALLARD. Irma Mae Griffin lists him on page 141 or "The History of the Town of Roxbury". As Miss Griffin states in the book, he did move to PA and intermarried with descendants of the MEAD family of Delaware Co. I would appreciate any documented dates or information on Benjamin's wife, Nancy Caguin. Thank you......Dorothy Holgate

Hello ODELLs in Livingston Manor. Yes, My 3rd great grandparents were Ruben ODELL and Emily Ester OLIVER, whose children were: Joseph, Joanna, Charity, Ruben jr., Hannah, Catherine, Rosa, William, Louisa and an adopted daughter Minnie Bailey (Baillie). I don't have any information about children of most of these. Joseph is my gggrandfather. I don't think Ruben Jr. ever married, that would leave William who might have married and passed on the name. But Lulu was probably her married name. What other
23. [NYDELAWA-L] Daniel Wilson [1]
I'm wondering if anyone out there has any information on either Daniel Wilson or Daniel Wilson Jr. listed in the 1790 and 1800 Census in Delaware County in the Middletown/Colchester area. Daniel is listed with 2 males 16+ and 5 males under 16 in the 1790 Delaware County Census. Daniel Wilson Jr. is listed with 1 Male 16+ and 3 females. Daniel is listed in some of the books on the delaware county site as being one of the earliest settlers in the Colchester area. I have several Daniel Wilson's in the fa

I forgot to add, yes, if people are interested, when the diorama is finished, we'll send Joyce a couple of pictures to put on the website. Maybe we should even send pictures before it's finished, so the greatest experts in the world can critique it and tell us if we've got anything wrong. Either or both of the U&D RR HS, and the Catskill Center, will have excerpts from the exhibit available on our websites, as well. Steve Delibert
