First, there are no cities in Suffolk County.
Suffolk County is divided into 10 towns and 2 Indian Reservations. The 10
towns are further divided into 31 villages and 125 hamlets.

Hi Barbara and List-
Yes, Lindenhurst at one time was a heavily German area. It was previously
known as Breslau. A short capsule history of it can be found at

I'm looking for the parents of Elizabeth HOWELL, b. Mar 12, 1798 in Patchogue, Suffolk Co., NY. She married Jared Woolley in Patchogue in 1820. Some of their children were born in Patchogue and some in Chautauqua Co., NY. I am related to their daughter Serepta Woolley, who was b. Oct 10, 1824 in Patchogue. I understand that there were many Howell's in Suffolk Co. during this period dating back many generations. Does anyone know which family this Elizabeth came from?

Thanks for the info on Suffolk County. It's going to take a few days to absorb it all. I'm happy to know I had the correct county. Now I just wish I could find some of the people I swear lived there or nearby in the early years of this century.

Dear Dave:
"A" Robert Nichols d. 14 August 1885 at Centreport, 68y 5m
12d. Which would put his birth at 02 Mar 1817.
This extraction comes from "The Long Islander" (newspaper)
as transcribed by David Roberts in his book (Heritage Books
1998), "Deaths Reported by the Long Islander 1878-1890."
Hope this helps. Best regards. Nancy.

Today's NEWSDAY (page A39) has an article (the first 3 paragraphs appear
after my signature) about how the movement to form a new Peconic County
suffered another legal setback yesterday.
There are folks on the "East End" -- the Towns of Riverhead, Southold,
Southampton, East Hampton and Shelter Island -- that want these 5 Towns to
secede from Suffolk County and form Peconic County. If successful, Peconic
would then be the 63rd current county in New York State.

Hi Listers
I have found all the Jarvis christenings in the First Church, Huntington,
LI for the dates I am interested in. Does anyone know how closely these
dates in this church coincide with the actual birth of the child ie within
the first year of life, the first 10 years of live, as an adult? The Jarvis
family used a few names over many generations and I am trying to figure out
which child was christened so that I can more easily search the church
records. The IGI shows no parents in the christenin

Hi:
The Hallock Genealogy shows Joshua-3 Hallock, b 1690 as a son of
William-2 and Mary (__) Hallock (and he has a fair number of
descendants).
Unfortunately, this Joshua was not named in William's will (at least
the abstract by Pelletrau). Does anyone know either why the Hallock
places him a son of William, or know where else he might belong?

I'm very curious as to the source of your information on Elizabeth (Howell)

Your Jared Woolley who married Elizabeth was the son of Jared Woolley, b.
