It's possible this was the same Hannah Caldwell b. Canada ca. 1864 in
Croghan, Lewis Co., NY in 1880. Her sister, Anna b. ca. 1860 was also b.
Canada, but her brother, Joseph b. ca. 1866. was b. NY. Her parents were
Joseph (b. ca. 1828) and Maggie (b. ca. 1829); both from Ireland.

Suzanne,
Thanks for passing along this information! I have this couple in my
husband's family tree. James KEIRSTEAD would be his fourth great grand
uncle and I would very much appreciate a copy of the photos you have taken.

The messages on scanning old negatives, has been very interesting. I have
hundreds of slides in boxes. Does anyone have experience in scanning the
positive images into a computer?

It is presumed that that the passenger records for the port of Saint John
were destroyed in the fire of June 20th, 1877. However, some records still
exist.
Brian Mitchell's "Irish Passenger Lists 1847-1871" contains a dozen or so

Thank you for your help. I had never heard of the Irish in the 1851 census
so I will see if someone can help. For the benefit of anyone reading this
post; I think that at least some of Together in Exile is on Ruby Cusacks Site.
This book would probably have been more accurately called "Index to
IRISH-SURNAMED Immigrants..." I have an Irish ancestor, Jane Nixon, who
m. Francis Pelkey, a Frenchman. In the 1851 census they are both
indicated as being French! I think a lot of Irish women who m. men who
were not from Ireland got overlooked. Jane remains a stray, city of
origin unknown; parentage, unknown; link to other Nixons of Lower
Brighton, unknown; burial place, unknown. Isn't genealogy fun? -- pshaw

The simple answer to your question is probably no, they came from all over
Ireland. However, distinct groups came at specific periods of time. I
found Peter Murphy's books, "Poor Ignorant Children" and "Together in
Exile" were very informative -- I had to get them through our local
university library, as they are not widely available. Also, are you aware

I have negatives of similar size and a six or seven year old flat bed
scanner. After some trial and error, I found that putting the negative
on the scanner and covering it with two sheets of printer paper allowed
the scanner to work. Then I used my equally elderly enhancing software
to reverse the black and white. I did a little touching up here and
there and the scanned image was as good as I remember the original print
to be. You may have to do some trial and error work to get the right

Dear List,
I have been searching for three of the sons of William Fleet b. 1815 and Mary Ann Wark b. 1819. They are James b. 1849, John J. b 1857, and Arthur D. b. 1860. All three were born in Saint John.
Any information would be helpful.

Dear Judy;
Have you tried any of your local photo shops? Many of the small independent
professional photo and camera stores may be able to help you to develop them
for you. However that could be expensive. On the other hand I have a EPSON
1660 Photo scanner with a built-in 35mm negative and slide adapter. I tried
to manipulate larger sizes with varying results. The EPSON people have a
film adapter (B81317) that I purchased for $99.00 US that can take up to
4"X5" negatives and it works great. However some
