Paul O'Bannon, who may be lurking out there, sent me some info on this
cemetery not too long ago. John O'BANNON (1790-1854) is the son of
Benjamin O'BANNON and Eleanor ASH. John married Katharine Bugar (or
Bulgar) BOLTON (c1794-1844) sometime before 1823, when their daughter
Ann Jemima O'BANNON was born. The 1811 date that David noted at the
Finke Cemetery is likely the worn remnant of an 1844 date. The 1811 date
doesn't jive with any of the other info on this family.

I'm trying to figure out the ancestry of WILLIAM JASPER O'BANION, b. about
1824 in Wilkinson Co. GA. My gg-uncle (now dead) researched this and in an
old letter he said that William Jasper's father was William O'Banion, b.
about 1800 in Wilkinson Co. (wife unknown), and his father was Jack O'Banion
b. about 1778 d. about 1844 in Jones Co. GA (wife unknown), and his father
was Elijah O'Banion b. about 1758 in Ireland d. in Wilkinson Co., GA. The
problem is, I do not know his sources or any other information
I have a list of all the O'Banions/O'Bannons in the 1827 Georgia Land
Lottery. If anyone would like me to look up particular names, I would be
happy to do so. The list gives name and county of each person (usually males
unless widows or orphans), and the area in which they won land.
I also have a list of O'Banion/O'Bannon marriages from an old History of
Wilkinson County, Georgia. Again, I am happy to look for names.
I also have a copy of the will of John O'Bannon, son of Bryan O'Bannon and
Ruth Burgess,
I have Benjamin O'BANION and Mary E.C. COPENHAVEN marrying in Caldwell Co.,
TX on 13 January 1858. I haven't determined who Benjamin's parents were.
Anybody know? Benjamin appears to have died between 1863 and 1870 - perhaps
during the war?
Julia A. O'BANION married Miles A. FOWLER. She's the daughter of Dawson
Bryant O'BANION, Jr. and Sarah Angelina YOUNG and was born ca. 1867 in
Caldwell County.
The Joseph O'BANION who married Alice JOHNSON is the son of the
above-mentioned Benjamin and Mary.
Hope this
Joan,
I really think there is a good chance that Benjamin could be a brother-in-law
to Sherwood Corley. I think I have already sent you my ideas, but I'll post
them for the group, so we can get their opinions as well.
In his will Sherwood Corley equally divides his estate among "my dear friends
and brothers that is Benjamin Bannon, Catlett Corley, John Corley, Richard
Corley, and Abner Corley." Now this could mean that Benjamin is a friend and
the others are brothers. I think Benjamin is a brother-in
I have found a couple of marriages that I cannot find a link to so
thought I would ask if any of you have heard of these names. These
marriages were in Caldwell Co., TX:
Benjamin O'Banion to Mary E.C. Copenhaver (don't have a date for this
one but they were in the 1860 census)
Julia A. O'Banion to M.A. Fowler Dec. 30, 1888
Joseph O'Banion to Alice Johnson Dec. 23, 1880
Let me know if these names ring a bell. Thanks.
I subscribed to this list to share information I noted while pursuing
(thus far in vain) my own great-grandfather's grave, near Berger, Franklin
County (Boeuf Township), Missouri.
The names I noted were:
Catherine O'Bannon d.1811 July 12
and John O'Bannon d.1854
The widower of my Dad's first cousin, a man named Forrest Forderhase who
owns the farmland surrounding this bluff-top cemetery, told me that the
O'Bannons were the first owners of the land acquired by my
great-grandfather: Heinrich Finke
Sherry:
Sorry, but I don't have anyone who looks like a likely fit. I suppose my
next move would be to check the grantor/grantee deed indexes for
Oglethorpe County and see whether there's any BANYANs, O'BANIONs, or
whatever listed as buying or selling land prior to 1799 - if there is
then that person might be the father of Thomas and Mary.
This is what I have from the 1790 SC census:

At the request of a listmember, here is the text of the will:
JOHN O'BANNON, 1785-1851, son of Bryant and Ruth Burgess O'Bannon.
I, John O'Bannon.....(etc)....
I give and bequeath to my beloved wife ELIZABETH O'BANNON, 101 1/4 acres of

the east half of said lot of land and 50 acres of land, lying and being in
the Fourth District of Wilkinson County, being part of the Gray lot and
northeastern corner of said lot; all my household
Hi everyone! I have to say I thought for a while my greatgrandfather made
his name up. I am glad I was wrong.
I don't know much about my O'Banion side. My father died when I was 12 and
while he was alive he didn't have any interest in the family lines. This
is what I do know.

Children of Joseph and Julia were:

After taking a closer look at the pension application of William B.
O'Banion, and hearing comments and suggestions of my fellow O'Banion
researchers, my hopes are dashed about Green Hamilton O'Banion being the
person who signed the affidavit. I was so sure that this could be a
good connection. I still have not ruled out the fact that Thomas
O'Banion from Limestone Co., AL is not in someway connected to my Green.
I am posting Green Hamilton O'Banion's line again:
Green Hamilton O'Banion b: abt 1787 in SC
As I was looking over some SC wills I had copied, I noticed that in the
will of Sherwood Corley (Feb. 10, 1805) that Benjamin Bannon is
mentioned as "my dear friend" and the will was witnessed by Robert
Deshazer.
Then in the will of Higdon Borrium (Aug. 27, 1807) Higdon appoints his
father William Borrium and Robert Deshazo Senr. and Joseph West as
executors. This will is witnessed by Robert Deshazo, Green Bannon and
Patsey Deshazo. Also it is proved by the oath of Robert Deshazo Junr.
and Green Banon on
Dear Friends,
I have found another clue in my search for the parents of Thomas O'Banion
born 1780 GA. I sent to Oglethorpe Co., GA for a copy of his marriage record
which took place there on 6 Jul 1799. They sent me a zerox of the ledger page
where the marriage license for Thomas Banyan and Milly Traylor was granted.
Since it was a ledger page, there were about 25 other marriages recorded as
well. Much to my surprise, about 2 names down is a marriage license granted
for Tyre Wimpee and Mary Banyan on
To add to what Sherry has already said about the Sherwood Corley
connection, we must remember that Sherwood O'Banion was on the bond for
the marriage of James Wilson O'Banion and Nancy Louisa Lacey Dec. 25,
1824 in Hinds Co., MS. Delinda Lacey is Nancy's sister who married John
O'Banion and after his death married John Smith. I wonder if Benjamin
named one of his sons Sherwood, after his friend/brother-in-law,
Sherwood Corley? Comments?
Joan
Dear Fellow Researchers,
I have good news and bad news. The good news is that we now have over 25
members in our O'Bannon/O'Banion mail list. The bad news is that our list is
not being used to its fullest. I want to encourage everyone to jump in there
and post to our list. It would be great if everyone posted info on their
particular O'Bannon/O'Banion line. I, for one, would really benefit from this
information. I don't know a great deal about the O'Bannon/O'Banion family,
and am trying to learn more.
