Hello, much journey for me looking up and receiving the military records for John Shepherd. I finally received them only to my disappointment that all the pages referred to him as a deserter. But I was told by a relative that she believes he was issued a reprieve....this was not on hi

Thank you for the information. I did find an article that said this outfit wasn't a real regiment, that it was made up of about 4 other batallions.

From what you have in your post, they probably had original French Model 1842 .69 smoothbore muskets. The French government rifled and rebored many of these to .70 or .71 caliber and 25,000 were sold to the U.S. government by Herman Boker & Company of New York in 1861. The Ordnance Department rated them as third class w

The poor guy was 40 years old when he went into Company F 99th OVI. The Civil War was hard on the young, not to mention those more mature. I'm about as patriotic as they come, but I can surely understand why he may have deserted....if he really did desert. Unfortunately, I don't know where you can go to see if h

I am not sure which county Company A was raised in, I never came across any county claiming it in my research. Here is the history of the 85th OVI:

This regiment was organized in the state at large in May and June, 1862, to

I am looking for what type of musket the 16th OVI was using.
Based on what I have found out so far, it appears they were using a French .69 Caliber Rifled Musket. This was through quartermaster records but no make or model for the musket.
I have a Zouave type bayonet that supposedly came from my GGG Gra

Judy,
I have a researcher in Washington DC that I (and many other Rootsweb folks) have
used for several years now. He is excellent. I am out of town at the moment so
can send you his contact information next week when I return. His turn around
time is fast (2-3 weeks), his fees are very reasonable (average of $15 per
pension or service file), he is thorough (if he sees anything else on your
person, even if you didn't ask for it, he will let you know), and he is very
dependable.

'Desertion' during the Civil War could mean many things, and be caused by many things.
When a man went to war he left behind his wife and children. He went home in the Spring to plant the fields and home again in the Fall to help with harvest. Sometimes his wife became ill and died and he went home to take care of his kids or farm them out to relatives and friends. Jocelyn in Ohio

I'm new to the list and wondered if anyone could offer some guidance to me
in finding Civil War Pension Records for Ohio Volunteer Infantrymen, 77th
Regiment, Company E? I'm looking in particular for the pension record for
Thomas H Wallace of Belmont County, Ohio.
Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.
