There are 2 volumes that cover a trip that Henry Howe made in 1846 and
another one in 1888, and so compared it with the first. The names with
a ??? in front are last names mentioned with no first name. The book
has history, biography and description of the land with very few
genealogies. There is no index. That's why when I look for a name in a
county, I write every name down and then post them, so I don't have to
look through the whole chapter again to look for another name.

Hello:
Trying to help someone trace their ancestors listed as one : J. C. Johnson
(no t) born in Ohio. Estimated birth about 1840. He had a son Ezra Ellsworth
Johnson born 1869, also born in Ohio. Ezra died a farmer on his own land
after 1900.
Any speculations on this will be helpful.
Thanks

Mahoning County was formed from Trumbull and Columbia, March 1, 1846.
It derived its name from Mahoning river. The name Mahoning is,

signifying "a lick," or Mahonink, "at the lick." The surface is rolling
and the soil finely adapted to wheat and corn. Large quantities of the
finer qualities of wool are raised. The valley of the Mahoning abounds
in excellent bituminous coal, which is well adapted to the smelting of
iron ore. There ar
