Hello everyone! For those of us with poor ancestors, you know how hard it can
be to find them. they're not in the newspapers, they can't afford obits, they
can't afford headstones, they didn't own anything..so there was no will, etc.
One of the few good sources is poorhouse records. My entire tree was
poor...and it drives me crazy sometimes looking for them! SO, I've purchased
a copy of the microfilm for the Athens County infirmary 1857-1928 and the
Children's home 1882-1911. I am transcribing the mic
Hello List,
I am researching my GGG Grandparents Mary Ann PHILLIPS and Bennett P. ARNOLD.
Mary Ann was born 1815-1816 in Athens Co.
m. Bennett P. ARNOLD 21 Jan 1834
Bennett was b. around 1815 in MA
date of death - unknown - I believe he died in Athens Co.
Mary Ann remarried Andrew STALDER after the death of Bennett.
They had no children. My mother has a copy of Mary Ann Stalder's will from Athens Co., so I believe she died in Athens Co. also.
I am unable to find where either Mary Ann or Bennett is bu
Go to www.nara.gov and you will find all the information you need as well as
being able to order or download some of the forms. There are different
procedures for obtaining records of a living vs. deceased veteran. I will
warn you -- due to the fire at NPRC, St Louis, in 1973, the records you're
looking for may not be available. I tried to get my Grandpa's WW I records
and they had been destroyed; but since I had his original discharge order
and pay record, they wanted what I had. The pay records are lo
When I first began researching my Beckley line, I found what would be a
reference to my third great grandmother, SALLY COLLINS. A biography of
her oldest son, H. Nelson Beckley that was posted on the Meigs County,
Ohio rootsweb site, referred to her maiden name She would marry
Jonathan Beckley between 1806 when his first wife died and 1812, the
year Nelson was born. Future Ohio census records would list her as being
born in 1790, which often meant somebody was born around said year.
Those Ohio census rec
I apologize. I Mistakenly said that the pages of 49-60 were complete on the
web site. They are not. My mistake. The missing pages of 50-58 will be the
next to be transcribed. What IS on-line are the missing page 48-49, as well
as 59-72 plus the misc. pages mentioned in the previous email. I apologize
for the hassle.

Some of you have had difficulty getting the site to load for you. I'm

problems, email me or try the link again later. Julie
I'm wondering if anyone out there knows the answer to this....
In the file from National Archives, Military records of John North,
there are several affiants on his behalf, some from Athens County where he
lived, others from surrounding counties. I can see where the government wrote
to these people asking them to re-count their knowledge of John's illness
etc. What I'm wondering is if the government just picked these people at
random from within the same Infantry Unit, or if the "Petitioner", Jo
Here's the answers to the below posted question, for those of you who might
need to know as well. Thanks to everyone who answered this for me!! Julie

Need discharge papers on a World War 11 veteran, which wasn't recorded in Athens County, I checked recruitor's office they didn't know how to get info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

While filing a death certificate that I recently received from the
Washington County Health Department, I noticed that I had already obtained
a copy from the Department of Health - Division of Vital Statistics in
Columbus several years ago. What surprised me is that the handwriting on
the two records is different. Perhaps a record had to be rewritten in
Columbus on their own special form or they did this before the purchase of
typewriters. If you obtain a death certificate from Columbus and question

Sorry for the cross-post, but maybe someone out there can help.
Supposedly there used to be a cemetery at the subject corner or close by,
was told by a relative this is where my g-g-grandmother was buried. The
stones are now gone, and the Brook's Shoe Distribution center is now in that
area. Does anyone know about this cemetery and where I might find some
information?
Thanks!

Looking for: Leffler, Forbes, Green, Gill, Palmer, McCune, et al.
My mind must have kicked out of gear when I posted about getting discharge papers. Do you think we will ever live long enough to see World War 11 (sure hope not.)
Thank you all

That sure is true about the thickness of a file. I have sent for several civil
war soldier pension files, most are up to ten pages, but when I finally got
John Quinn's file it was 3 inches thick. If a child was handicapped at the
time of the soldiers death, then the child could also continue to draw on the
soldier's pension through adulthood unto death. As was the case with John
Quinn's youngest son who did not pass until the 1940's, so I received almost
100 years worth of records and affidavits o
Some of you, have brought to my attention that when I send a link in the

send the address again in this email, in hopes that it won't do that. If for
some reason it does double itself, the address is

I apologize for this irritating problem. Best of luck. Julie

Many obituaries on my line mention the M.E. Church in poston/Sugar creek. I
am very interested in looking through the church's records. I do not see the
church as being active in the list of Churches on the Athens web site. Does
anyone know if it still operates, and if not, who might have absorbed their
records? Has anyone ever indexed these records for this church? Julie North
The infirmary pages have been transcribes, pages 0-11 plus odds/ends pages
later in book, as well as the index pages as they were given in the front of
the book. In just a couple of dozen pages, I've already discovered that MANY
people who appear in the actual pages are NOT in the index...sometimes entire
families are missing from the written index pages. I've added every name into
the index that I've found on the pages so far. I've also added to the index
those names that are spelled differently in t
I finally learned of my ancestors fathers name. Matilda Juniper was born 12 May 1840 and her fathers name was Andrew Juniper. Matilda and her husband are found living in Nelsonville, Athens County, OH in the 1860 census. They migrated to Rock Island County, IL before settling in Jasper County, IA.
