1. Marriage look up in Athens County [1]
Dear Listers, Is there anyone who could do a look up for me on a marriage of Jeremiah (Jerry) FRENCH and Lydia SMITH for April 13, 1837. I'm trying to locate parents of either. Thank you, Ruth Clewis
2. Re: Peters [1]
Hi I checked the 1860 census for Athens Township in Athens County and couldn't find your George W. Peters. The quality for this part of the census was substandard on the census CD I have so maybe I could have overlooked it or couldn't make it out. Sorry. 5. Re Apple Creek [1]
One of my collateral relatives, Morse Sterling, moved from Athens Co., OH and by 1850 was in Greene Co., Illinois. By 1860 he was in neighboring Macoupin Co., IL (along with my direct ancestor, his believed brother, James Sterling). In northwestern Macoupin Co., and I believe also in southeastern Greene Co. was Apple Creek. This may be a coincidence, but it certainly rang a bell with me. I would not be surprised if other people from Athens Co. moved to Greene and Macoupin Counties, IL. The Illinois Sta
6. re: hoaxes [1]
Perhaps one shouldn't necessarily 'feel bad' about falling for something, but before forwarding anything to a list there is a responsibility to check the validity of that which you forward. There are a lot of folks out there, who while they don't have to pay Uncle Sam for every e-mail they send, do have to pay their Internet Service Provider for each e-mail they get. I belong to 2 dozen list - by my last count - maybe more, and I got the 'hot flash' about e-mail charges on at least 10 of them. Since I get
7. 1910 Athens Census? [1]
Does anyone have access to the 1910 Athens County Census or is it available online? I am looking for Freeman Marshall Teeters. He was born in 1901 in Athens County. I found him in the 1920 Census. He was living with his mother Emma Smith. I know that Emma married a Smith. So it looks like she married this Smith sometime between 1901 and 1920. However, only Freeman and his mother Emma was listed in the 1920 Census. I don't know where the Smith man went to. I do know that she had 4 children by him. I am tryin
8. Perserving Tombstones [1]
Over the last few days I have seen discussions on several mailing lists over the use of Shaving Cream on tombstones. Today I came across the following website. Saving Graves: <<>> It does a good job of explaining why we should not use it but also tells exactly what damage it does to the stone. If you then go to the home page of this site it gives you links to additional information li
9. 1850 Census Help - NYE Family [1]
Hi listers, I was very blessed to have a person give me the information that I was searching for on the 1860 census. My Lydia Nye was listed in Dover Twp living with George Nye (her son), age 35. Lydia was listed as age 73. Now, I know that census information is not incredibly accurate, but age 73 puts her 5 years younger than her tombstone says she is. Does anyone have the 1850 Census? Can anyone provide me with information on Lydia NYE, probably in Dover Twp? Her correct age can help me piece toget
10. Census Help - NYE Family [1]
Hi listers! I wonder if anyone has an 1860 census published for Athens County. I am looking for information on Lydia NYE in the 1860 census. She died in 1862, but I am hoping for the information as to where she was born and the year that she was born. Who she was living with (if anyone) would be great information too. Thanks for your time and attention to this. - Jean Griesan
11. Williams HELP!! [1]
Is anyone working on the J. Harvey Williams family of Athens Co? He had a son John Q Williams born abt 1861, Lodi Twp, died Dec 5, 1938. At that time John's living siblings were Lucy, Charles, and Isaac. This isn't my family. I'm trying to find a line to get a friend into DAR. Boy, I don't want to try to sort out the Williams family if some angel has already done it. I'd rather work on more research books for you all. I don't do them alone - I mostly edit. The last two are: "Marriage Records 1913-1925

Good Morning All. Next Sunday September 17, 2000. There is a Boudinot reunion in Stockport, Ohio. I was wondering if anyone on this list will be there.? 14. Apple Creek? [1]
I just returned from a most wonderful meeting of relatives that we never knew existed until about 6 months ago. We found them (and they found us!) thanks to the internet and genealogical web sites. The half-great aunt that I met has also been looking for a place that she believes her dad was either born in or near or lived when he was very young. She says she was there when she was VERY young, about 75 years ago. She thinks it was in Athens County, OH or very near Athens County. She thinks the name of t
15. Re: [Fwd: Fwd: Family YearBook SCAM is BACK!] [1]
Thanks for the information about the "fill in the blank" - family history. I started a correspondence file for them at the Athens County Genealogy Chapter library and they are filed under "RIP-OFFS". I did purchase a Schumacher book some years ago which I used in my genealogy speeches as a bad example. Before we all had computers it would have been one way to get a mailing list for your own family history but now I can't even give them that much. 16. Cone [1]
Regarding the query about Oberholzer and Cone possibly marrying in Switzerland before coming to America, I suppose it is possible. However, there were Cone families in Athens Co., OH. They came to Athens Co. around 1818, at the same time as their in-laws, the Sterling families, after spending perhaps twenty years in New York, in and around Chenango Co. The Cone and Sterling families came to New York from East Haddam, Middlesex Co., CT. There are several old genealogies on the Cones available in at least
17. HOLLAND in Athens, Lodi twp [1]
Does anyone know if the HOLLAND, JAMES listed in the 1860 Athens, Lodi twp, OH census is the same HOLLAND, J. listed in the 1870 Athens, Lodi, twp, OH census. Seems reasonable but there is a match on only two of the listed children, and their place of birth changes from MD to OH in the 1870 census, although his pob remains MD. Thanx very much for any help that you can give to clear up this confusion on my part. Bill

21. Re: OHATHENS-D Digest V00 #123 [1]
Mike - If you are talking about the present day Alexander Presbyterian Church, I can give you a little information that may help. My gg grandfather, Rev TA Welsh was one of the early ministers of this church. (His portrait hangs in the room behind the sanctuary.) When he was minister, it was a Cumberland Presbyterian Church - Cumberland being the sect, as was the current Harrisonville Pres. Church in Meigs. Of which he is recognized as being the founder. Rev Welsh and his wife, Jane, are buried in the "n
22. e-mail charges and other urban legends [1]
I thought at first of replying directly to the sender, hgbrooks, but then decided that it might be informative to send the below info to the list in general. There is no bill in congress to do anything of the sort mentioned, 5-cent charge per e-mail, or any other amount. If, in the future you will check the following site before forwarding this sort of thing, it will save a lot of people, on a lot of lists, a great deal of time and aggravation. http://www.snopes.com/ There are several other sites

24. older survey of Alexander Presbyterian/Old Cumberland Cemeteries [1]
Does any older survey exist for those buried in the old cemetery between Alexander Presbyterian Church and U.S. Route 50, then the one conducted by the now defunct Alexander Genealogy organization? Original records were lost and not all headstones are legible at this time. Too, is this older cemetery, as listed above, the Cumberland Cemetery? I've seen a map that would indicate Cumberland was on the same side of the road, but farther west, then that would be for those buried beside/behind Alexander Presbyte
