Hello Belmont County researchers. I have been researching my family Surnames
that came from Belmont County, Ohio in the 1800s. I have come to find out
alot of families came from Belmont County and surounding counties to Brown
County, Indiana during middle 1850s and after. We even have a small town in
Brown County called " Belmont" that I'm sure was named after the Belmont
County in Ohio by our ancestors. I have a book of Brown County History that
names alot of these families who settled in our County from

Dear Sharon,
Wouldn't you know one of the few times I have responded to a query and I
messed up. I wrote: Evan Ogan is my three great grandfather, gggrandmother
his daughter Maria, her son ggrandfather Allison Wilson. Should have been
ggggrandfather Evan Ogan, his daughter Sarah Ann Ogan Ary Wilson, her daughter
Maria Ary Wilson (Maria married her stepbrother), her son Herbert Wilson.
Sorry for the confusion I caused.

I have records of proceedings filed in Belmont County, as
announced in the "Belmont Chronicle" (see below) but no records
of the actual proceedings or findings of the court. Does anyone
know if such further information is avaialable? This is a very
curious affair, a filing for partition of property in 1873, long
after the original owners were dead, and with their sons (uncles
of the partition suit filer) living on that property. I can find
no events (e.g. deaths, etc.) which might have prompted this

Thanks, Kristy, for your offer to share information on the Morelands.
First, though, does anyone know the relationship between Manley Gatten and

with this? Mary MOORE, Joseph MOORE, maybe Sarah Brokaw MOORE.
Also a cemetary name BSouthern Cemetary. There we have Mary MOORE

Levi ran a general store. Both buried in Friends Cemetery, Flushing.
According to Quaker records,
Eli and Elizabeth, with their three children, Jonathan, Mary Ann, and Isaac
moved from Flushing, Ohio to Wayne County, Indiana in 1836. Elizabeth's
brother Jonathan Ellis, had proceeded them by about a year. This was a 200
mile journey across Ohio on the Old National Trail. They settled in the

Just found the link above to "all" the cemeteries in Ohio and presumably
the main site also has lists for other states. Note that this list seems
to be of the cemetery business office which may not be at the cemetery but
this may be even more useful anyway. Good hunting!

I second what John has said regarding JL's leaving the list: I see his/her
name every day with help for others. I sure wish I could respond to the
help needed, because I appreciate everything he/she does even though I have
not been directly affected. Why can't we all be a little more tolerant?
And surely, the good that JL has done completely outweighs any irritation
on the scales of kindness! nancy

Nearly all of the names recorded here are all found in a school register
of the early 1850's which is in the possession of Mr. West. It will be
displayed during our program.
The houses and other buildings of our early settlers were typical of
pioneer times. Some of the earlier ones wre of round-log structure being
later replaced with hewed logs. Windows wre made of oiled papers. The
floors of split-log, the roofs of clap-board and the fire place

Laverne,
I'm researching the Jeffers family. I have at least 4 Jeffers/Norris
marriages late 1800's - early 1900's.
One of which is Hazel Norris to my great-grandfather William Howard
Jeffers circa 1916.
The story begins:
Annie Hines McMahon's marriage to Lewis Norris is one of my favorites.
Although not a Jeffers/Norris marriage, it is of interest in the
following manner.
Annie Hines, daughter of Baltzar Hines, immigrant from Bavaria married
James I. McMahon.
Mary Ellen McMahon was an offsprin
