1. [OHBELMON-L] Macbees [1]
I found them....did a google search using the Knights of Macabee as the subject...... http://www.rootsweb.com/~tncrocke/fampics/kotm/kotmhistory.html The Knights of the Maccabees were a fraternal and benevolent "legal reserve society." Families of deceased members received benefits in the form of legal-reserve insurance. All white persons of sound health and good character, from birth to 70 years of age, were eligible for membership. By the 1890s it provided not only death benefits but also sick ben

5. Re: [OHBELMON-L] Pioneer Life in Belmont Co. [1]
I am particularly fond of the work done by Brenda Brown Lasko for her own family research, "Climbing the Brown Family Tree". I think she does a good job of depicting life in Belmont (York Township) in the early 1800s. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cindy Courtier" To: Sent: Wednesday, October 09, 2002 5:40 PM Subject: [OHBELMON-L] Pioneer Life in Belmont Co. > Does anyone have any books or other resources or suggested websites with > information
6. [OHBELMON-L] Plat Map of Barnesville [1]
>From THE STORY OF BARNESVILLE, by Sheppard..."Mr. Barnes brought over from St. Clairsville, in the summer of 1808, the county surveyor, John Brown, who surveyed and made the original plat of Barnesville....it was dedicated 11-9-1808." This plat is recorded on page 454, Vol B. of the Records of Deeds, at ST. Clairsville. There is mention of several early lot owners, and a section on early settlers, but no mention of an Isaac Wilson.....sorry.
7. [OHBELMON-L] 1891 Martins Ferry Newspaper - Trans. #1 [1]
Hello Folks - I've been reviewing some newspaper microfilm I've borrowed via ILL from the OH Hist. Society. The reel I looked at (partially) today is The Evening Times - Martins Ferry, OH - Mon Aug 3, 1891 thru' Sep 21, 1892, and I thought I'd share some local news for you from the hard copies I made. I'll try to remember to capitalize the surnames so you can more easily see if your relative made the paper. Monday - Aug 3, 1891: W. H. ORR, First street, receives fresh groceries daily. Prices with

9. [OHBELMON-L] Fw: Maccabees [1]
Carol felt from what she'd read that the McAbees WERE Masonic, so to clear it up I wrote the Masons....this is their answer; Hi Sandra: Thanks for visiting our website! To answer your question... No, the Maccabees were never apart of the Masons, but many Masons were Maccabees! It wasn't unusual for early fraternal joiners to belong to as many as eight or ten different orders at the same time! Also, different orders offered different services to their members, i.e. Freemasons offered relief benefi

The following are some newspaper transcriptions which are from hard copies I have made from microfilm rolls I've rented from the Ohio Historical Society. - Nancy _____________________ The Evening Times, Martins Ferry, Ohio, Thursday, October 15, 1891, Vol I - NO. 194. - Roll #22847: "Slowfast" WILLIAMS is the lonely occupant of the lock-up. The Evening Times - Martins Ferry, OH - Sept 7, 1891: The many friends in this city of Mrs. Frank MCKIM, nee Jennie WILEY, will be sorry to hear that she is quite ill with typhoid fever at her home in Weston, W. Va. Her little daughter Marie is also down with the same disease. The schools commenced this morning, and the rooms are filled to overflowing. It is thought that other quarters will have to be provided to accommodate the number of children seeking school advantages. Last week Rev. Father MATTIN

No McNamaras at Greenwod -----Original Message----- From: the Hamiltons [mailto:hamilton@getus.com] Sent: Saturday, October 05, 2002 2:33 PM To: Scott Byrd; OHBELMON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: McNamara graves in Greenwood Cemetery Do you show any McNamaras in there? If there are too many to list, I am mostly hoping to find Sarah and James McNamara, both supposedly dead before April 17, 1899, but the man who remembers this might be off a year or two. They could also be under the name MACK. Thank you Nancy A
15. [OHBELMON-L] mcnamara [1]
I am researching my Ohio family and am looking for my great grandmother
Melvina McNamara Deegan who shows up in the 1880 census in Bridgeport outside
of Martin's Ferry. At that time the spelling of Deegan was interpreted as
Diggins. She was 20 years old and had been born in Ohio as were both of her
parents. I would be very grateful if anyone has any family background on
her. I have belonged to the list for a year and this is first time I found
the name. In the 1900 census the name is listed a

17. [OHBELMON-L] E.S.Brown [1]
How very interesting....what did the house look like? I've seen a couple of these extant buildings, but in PA......the one I remember was stone, and whitewashed...it seems to me it was strangely shaped, perhaps with more than 4 sides... I looked in the CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF BELMONT COUNTY, by McKelvey, and find that a E.S. Brown served as a Pvt. in Co D, 43rd Regiment, OVI.....composed mostly of men from Bellaire, Bridgeport and Martin's Ferry. It was recruited from Oct to Dec. 1861. It seems likely

19. [OHBELMON-L] Greenwood Cemetery photos [1]
Hello all, I would be willing to take photos of gravestones at Greenwood or any other Bellaire cemetery. The problem lies in how fast you need the photos. I have moved away from Bellaire (I live about 2 hours away now). I used to work at the Bellaire Public Library and would field alot of geneology questions there. I did take several photos for out-of-town folks before. ANYWAYS, since I don't get back "home" as often as I used to...it may be a little while before I get to take the pictures. If you und
20. [OHBELMON-L] 1880 CENSUS SITE data [1]
Someone just emailed me that, on the 1880 census, to the right, there is the word Household. If you click on that it will give you the info on everyone who lived there, which is REALLY nice......as I didn't have anyone I was really searching for in 1880 I hadn't explored the whole site. It also will give you the households that came either before or after the one you searched for, just so you can see who lived next door, and in the neighborhood.....

22. [OHBELMON-L] McAbees and tombstone symbols [1]
I just had an email from a fellow list-member, a Mason, saying that the McAbees have no relation to the Masonic orders, and that the McAbees were origional a Jewish legal group who laid down the rules of conduct for the people to follow in their religious ritual practices. Apparently they evolved into an insurance company. However, while surfing around reading about various organizations (sall so interesting) I came upon these, things we commonly see on headstones, and their symbolic meaning....who knew?
