That's true.
I made my first trip to the Greene Room in September, and found a record of
my great grandparent's marriage. That's something that Vital Statistics
didn't have.
It does take time, but it's a nice room and the staff and volunteers are
very helpful.

Actually, if you go to the Greene Room there are histories and church
records
of births before 1869. Might not be the official type of record that you
need but it works when supported by other documentation such as census and
tax records.
Does anyone know if the LDS is working on other census to produce as they
have the 1880? It is so nice to have the disc right here at my desk. Linda

Could someone look for a death record for me? I am lookingfor
a death record for a Rebecca Jamima North WALKER, or Jamima Rebecca North
Walker. She is on the 1850 cencus for Greene County but missing on the 1860.
I believe she must have d 1850-1860.
Thanks

Hi Linda,
There is information on the death certificate that may help you
If her husband survived her, his name may be listed. Her last residence
will be listed so you will be able to check city directories and possibly
find her husband that way. The informant on the certificate may also
provide a clue, a relative or neighbor. The funeral home who handled the
arrangements may have additional information about her-including who paid
for the funeral.
Once you have her exact date of death, you can then o
Seeking info on this family who lived in Greene Co., 1800-1910. Unsure of
children. Also looking for area called "OLD TOWN" property, it's said that
when my Johnson line, James C. and John D. and families moved to Ohio, they
renamed area they lived "OLD TOWN", as was name for their VA. property.
Don't believe it was an actual "town", but more a property area. Grateful
for any clues.

Most Ohio counties actually started keeping birth and death records in 1867.
I think Greene County was one of the few that did not start keeping them
until 1869. Some counties (perhaps all) complied with an earlier law that
required births and deaths to be kept beginning in 1856, but the law was
repealed because it was not complied with. I understand that many of those
earlier records are not extant. Highland County births and deaths for that
time period have been published by their genealogical society.

Hi, Debbie......
It appears you are not aware of this. Ohio did not start keep birth and
death records until 1869. Some counties started a few years earlier but
those between 1850-1860 are non-existent unless you are lucky enough to find
a family BIBLE record, etc. I wish you well on your research.

Someone asked about Greene Co. marriages. LDS has a film of marriage
records for Greene Co. I have extracted them for my surnames and entered
them into a spreadsheet. This was submitted to Rootsweb and is available on
the web at http://userdb.rootsweb.com/regional.html
Unfortunately, I see no way to browse Greene County by itself. The site
lets one see all of RootsWeb Contributor data and is useful to know about.
You can obtain copies of marriage records from the Courthouse in Xenia, Ohio
- Greene County or, if they are older records your need, you can contact the
Greene County Archives. The archives address and phone is:

Xenia, Ohio
The best person to contact at the archives is Chris. His last name escapes
me. He will do all he can to help you.
Probate Court phone number is (937) 562-5366

I am also interested in the Brewer surname, but I have very little
information on this family except what family myth follows:
Andrew Paul Brewer m: Laura Iris Campbell (dates unknown), they had a
daughter, Mabel Venita Brewer who married George W. Huston, born in El
Dorado, Ohio. George and Mabel divorced in Montgomery County sometime after
1913 when my grandmother, Marjorie E. Huston (Dexter) was born, and they had
a couple other children prior to that time. George shortly thereafter
married Cora
Hello, Viola......
I live in Greene County and, indeed, there is an Old Town still alive and
well just outside of Xenia on Rt. 68 North. I can't tell you anything of
the history of it but perhaps if you contact the Greene County Historical
Society, they may be able to help you out. Here is the address and telephone

I have had some interesting notes off List about my grandfather Thomas Swaney
who lived in South Charleston in 1900 and is buried in Beavertown Cemetery. I
thought I would share one memory of him related I think now to the Divine
Healer occupation on his 1900 Census. Mom told me that none of the kids would
ever touch Grandpa when he was ill. They swore that he drew the energy out of
them. Also when he was in his 80's in the 1930s he had a little church in
East Dayton where he preached as a lay preache
I am searching for Samuel (b. 1834) and Rebecca Downey Morgan who left Greene
Co. and last appear in Greene, Lawrence, MO in 1880 Census. While doing so I
came upon a will from 1832 of a Samuel Morgan in Montgomery Co. OH. Mentioned
in this will was an eldest daughter, Polly Mason. There was the name Mason
early on in the William Downey family of Greene Co. Is this connected?
Actually, I am still trying to find the grave of Rebecca Downey Morgan's
mother Ellen Jane McDorman Downey McIntosh who lived i
Hi,
Does anyone on the list know of the Burger family who may have lived in
Bellbrook? I am looking for Sue and Buddy Burger who are grandchildren of
my aunt, Hallie Shaw Conger. Hallie is buried in the Bellbrook Cemetery. I
need more information on this branch of my family line to complete my line.
Thanks for any help.

While we are discussing Johnsons - I am trying to find the parents of Nelle
Beatrice Johnson, born 19 Sep 1892 place unknown, who may be the daughter of
a Charles Johnson and Mary??.
My late mother-in-law, Lima, born 1909, was the eldest of 4 children of Nelle
Beatrice Johnson and Charles Milo Hormell, married Dec 02, 1907, and knew
little about her family because after her mother left home, the parents
divorced, went South, each married several more times, and both abandoned
their children to his mo
There is another cemetery also referred to as Stevenson Cemetery - near
Massies Creek - and not far from the other one.
From Route 42 - N.E. of Xenia - turn left on Stevenson Road - follow it to
the covered bridge (which, I understand, is about to be replaced - but the
old bridge itself will remain standing along side). At the end of the
covered bridge, turn right - onto Jones Road (Stevenson Road continues to
the left) - travel up the hill - at the top, look for a lane that goes back
to the right - the c
