Hello all - If I remember correctly, the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) was a fraternal organization developed AFTER the war for veterans. I believe that they may have taken some responsibility for tending to the graves of veterans - sometimes GAR markers wind up on the wrong graves, which indicates to me that the people placing them didn't know the individuals. For example, we have a father and son Jacob Surbeck. The son fought in the war, then eventually moved west and died in Kansas. The father st

Hi Linda, yes I did look at an electronic copy of the grant but haven't
ordered it yet since I'm not 100% sure it's my fam member. I'm wondering
if you know what MI counties were considered part of the Michigan-Toledo
Strip. Also can you translate the other abbreviations on the document?
like what is "Aliquot Parts, Sec/blk, Twnshp, Range, Fract. Sect.,
Meridian (my original question), State and county". Do all of these
abbreviations pertain to the location of the property? If so, then the

There is a John M. Smith listed in the Toledo city directories for
1889-1891. Occupation listed is "coal" address at 330 Canal Street back
then. No Chaney surnames are listed. I will manually search a 1901 Lucas
county directory to see if he or her family is listed. Hope this helps!

I am looking for a picture of a child that is on roller skates and was
published in the Toledo Blade Peach Section, The boy was about three years
old. I would imagine it was around 1935or 1936 sometime in the spring. If
anyone runs across it while searching in the paper I would love to have a
copy or scan of it. The little boy's name is Douglas Hood. Thanks so much.

Does anyone know who some of the priests were at the Catholic churches
in Toledo in 1911. I have a name Stephen Horhu but I can't make out the
last letter. At the top of the marriage record it says Assumption
B.V.M. was that St. Mary's Church?
Thanks. Kathy Baker

Sorry to be a bother to some but with all the crisscrossing we do in
our research, it seems that many of us accumulate, or have access to
information from other counties. Being in CA, and belonging to THIS
list, I thought I'd throw out the question to see what I'd get. You
never know unless you ask. For the most part, this has been a very
helpful and encouraging list. Thanks to all, Karen

Dear List Members:
I am trying to determine which enumberation district and township a
particular address would be in, when searching the 1880 and 1910 census
for the Lucas County area. Is there a site which gives this data? My
addresses of interest include: Machen, Union, North 12th. These are
street names which appear in my Toledo ancestors obits. I am trying to
use the ancestory.com web site which shows images of the census on-line
but I don't know where to begin my search since I do not know whic

I'm interested in connecting with someone who is researching the surname

southern Michigan. If you know anything about either surname could you

I called the caretaker of the cemetary today and actually got her
husband. What a wealth of info he was and a delight to talk to. He's
been a long time resident of Nevada and was able to give me an educated
guess as to the predominat religion (catholic & methodist) and industry
(farming and railroad) for that area in the early 1900's. He even looked
up some telephone numbers of what may be distant relatives still in the
town. It made my morning. He said he would be more than happy to help
others. His nam

It was at one time called "7 mile woods" I don't know why. I had several sections of my family in Immacualte Conception. The names were Stahl and Carter.
