Dear Susan: My grandmother's second husband was Howell "Harry" Hollingberry. I believe he was from western PA. I'll look for his obit that will tell who his parents were. 2. [OHMAHONI-L] Hagan [1]
Trying to find out what happened to Nicholas Hagan. Was he murdered? As far as I can tell, he died around 1931 in Youngstown, supposedly shot by a bootlegger. Does anybody have newspaper records for that time who can look this up? Thanks, Ed Hagan
3. [OHMAHONI-L] Re: OHMAHONI-D Digest V98 #72 [1]
I'll bet Lawson's was the dairy I was trying to remember in my earlier post. Didn't the owner of Lawson's (Lawson?) run for office to try to get the blue laws changed so he could sell milk on Sunday? There was a small market (larger than today's convenience stores, but not a supermarket) on Belmont near (maybe next to) a Red Barn restaurant (another name from the past) a few buildings north of Gypsy Lane. I think it was a Lawson's. I remember getting the full-gallon bottles from there. (No, milk - not beer)

HI, While in Columbus, you can visit the Ohio Historical Society off 17th St. which contains death records, newspapers on microfilm (including the Youngstown Vindicator), county information and much, much more. Copies are .25. And the parking is free. You can also pop into the Ohio Genealogical Library on Front St. It has census detail from many states up to 1860-1870 and various states and Ohio counties info as well. Talk to Paul who is one of the most helpful persons I have ever found in any sta

7. [OHMAHONI-L] RE: Nostalgia & Youngstown [1]
Hi Everyone, I saw a few people talking about Youngstown and the memories of places. When my husband retired from the Army in 1992, we moved to Lordstown and I am only a stones throw from Mahoning Co. I still find that I go to Youngstown to do what needs to be done rather than go to the Trumbull Co. area. Youngstown is what I know! Someone mentioned, "HANDEL'S Ice Cream." It is still in the old location on Market and as busy as ever. They have a store in Liberty on Belmont Ave.

12. [OHMAHONI-L] Need tips for Ohio research [1]
I am planning a trip to Ohio in late September. This will probably be my only opportunity for research in the state. I will be in Zanesville, Columbus and if necessary Youngstown. My grandparents were immigrants, one arriving in 1908, the other already here. They met after their arrival. I hope to verify their marriage date. They had at least two children; one was killed in an unusual accident at an early age, but I don't even know the child's name (and I would like to). I also need to confirm dob fo
13. [OHMAHONI-L] Nostalgia time again. [1]
Since this list is getting awfully quiet, I decided to post a little nostalgia message. Hope this provokes some response. (Besides telling me where to shove my nostalgia). While looking at the East Side, actually Hazelton, on the 1920 Mahoning county census, I was struck by the familiarity of a name. Morris Schwebel lived at 20 Hazeltine Avenue. He was a Baker in a Bake Shop. Now, does anybody remember Schwebel bread? Does it still exist? This must have been the founder of the bakery or the father of the f

Ed: Bakeries? I lived within a block of Bixler's Bakery, West Ave. at Marshall St. Could smell the bread baking there day and night. Wonder Bakery? Later I used to go on my SCOOTER --I mean one foot on the floorboard and the other pushiking on the sidewalk down to Wonder Bakery for "day-old bread and cup-cakes"--the bakery being on Mahoning towards town frm Steel St. --and I lived up Mahoning about two miles. Can't believe it today. We had Ward's bakery out our way also. The big Isaily at Mahoning an

21. Re: [OHMAHONI-L] p.s. to prior on Nostalgia [1]
I forgot that there was some intimation that posts of this site should have some "overt" genealogical seaching angle, and not be pure "how it was". So for anyone searching for Gillingham or Benson names, my father's pool room partners were Harry Benson, and then later Paul Gillingham. Even earlier than "the pool hall", my father was in business with an Arthur Watkins --fruit and veggie stand, on Mahoning just "town-side" of West Ave. subsequently he was also in the haberdashery business with a very fi
