Hello All.
Unfortunately, to gain access to a pre-1908 death record in OH, you do need
to know what county the person died in. Those records are kept at the
Probate Court. If you are certain the person did not die in Stark, think
about where a child, sibling, or parent might have lived. Perhaps they were
visiting when they died. A death record is filed where the eprson actually
died, not where they lived. If they were a veteran, they might have died in
Erie Co. in the Old Soldier's Home. You might ch
I would appreciate a lookup in Stark Co. early marriage references for the
marriage of a Catherine/Catharine Mercer (or anyother spelling of Mercer) to
a Mr. Garret/Garrott/Carrott or similar spellings in the 1840's. Catherine
Mercer according to family notes was born in Canton, Stark County, Ohio.
In fact any Catherine Mercer to anyone from 1840 to 1855. She married
several times and did not record any on their first names. Census records
gave me the name of the third husband.

I have some information about a Henry Freed, son of Peter and Hannah Freed.
Henry was born 28 Jun 1842 in Stark County and was married to a Barbara
Haynes. If this is the Henry Freed you are interested in, let me know and
I'll send you want I have. This branch of the Freed family moved to Indiana
where Henry died in 1900.
Good luck with your search!

It is very conveniently and pleasantly situated on the east side of the Tuscarawas, or Muskingum river, in the midst of one of the most wealthy and fertile Wheat growing districts in the state of Ohio.--It occupies both banks of the Canal, having a large and commodious B

Is Carol Goff on this list? An e-mail to her came back "user unknown"
and I've lost her snail-mail address. If any of you are in touch with

Dear Orleata,
Everton's "Handybook for Genealogists" (Eighth Edition) says that
the State of Ohio kept death records starting in 1908. Although this
doesn't help you, since the record you seek is for a 1905 death, I'll give
the address for post-1908 records here, anyway, in case someone else on
the this list might find it helpful:

Hi there.
I'm interested in any information about the family of
Henry Fried/Freed, and the family of Henry Davis.
Does anyone out there have a copy of "Portrait & Biographical
Record of Stark Co., Ohio"? I would be interested in knowing
if there are any Fried/Freeds listed or a Henry Davis.
Thank you.

The last I heard they were still charging 25". At least Massillon, Alliance
and Canton City charges 25" - I assume Stark County does as well. (I've not
had any luck with them.) If you need addresses for Massillon (births and
deaths within Massillon city limits), Alliance (births and deaths inside ci

It has been a while since I posted a message and thought I would try once
again. Maybe someone new on the list can help me to break down this brick
wall!
I am looking for the parents of Phillip J. Eberhart, born August 16, 1841, in
Wayne Co., OH. His death certificate indicates his father's name was Joseph
Eberhart and mother unknown. I have been unable to confirm his father's
name. The informant was one of his son's. Phillip's parents (according to
census records) were from the Alsace region of
Don't forget. For those who died in OH 1913-37, you can look them up at
http://dbs.ohiohistory.org/dindex/search.cfm When you search, try all
spellings as they apparently used OCR technolgy to scan them from the files.
Therefore there are many mispellings.

Hello Listers:
I am wondering if anyone can give me the maiden name of William E.
Melchior/Melchoir's wife, Sarah E. b. Nov 1870?
They were married in Canton, Stark Co., OH about 1895.
Hope to hear from someone. Thanks.

Shirley,
I have a death (I think) in Stark County but on contacting Stark they have no
record. I know my gg-grandfather was buried in Alliance City Cemetery, but I am
not sure where he died. It is possible he died in Smith Twp., Mahoning Co.,
although Mahoning has no death record either. He died in 1905.
Is there any clue you can give me as to where I might be able to find his death
record, all I can find is the cemetery record.
Thank you for you willingness to help.

Marriage records from that period were virtually non-existent. The state
was just being settled then. No official records were kept for another 30
years. There are some published books of early church records which list
some marriages. There are some early Stark Co. records in book form now
too-- but none of these records contain any information about parents. At
best, you might find the names of the witnesses; usually only the minister
performing the ceremony.
I can check those reference books at our
Karen,
This might be a lead. I found William and Sarah in the 1920 census in Canton,
OH. It lists William as head, living at 403 N.W. Shorb or Thorb Avenue.
William is 47 and Sarah is 45. Lists Sarah's father as being born in PA.
Living with them is Joseph Eberhart and Jennie Eberhart - listed as
brother-in-law and sister-in-law of William. Both Sarah and Jennie list their
father as being born in PA, while Joseph and William have two different
fathers. That would make Jennie and Sarah sisters. Jenni

I recently saw additional information from the 1880 census regarding Elias GARBER, my great grandfather. He was listed as 51 years old living in Perry Twp. Being born Abt 1829, can he be the same as Elias GERBER, son of John and Magdalena KECK GERBER, b Abt. 1840 in Tuscarawas Co? I'm now thinking my great grandfather could have been a descendant of Christian GERBER who settled in Stark Co.
Doug Garber
She's not listed in the Portrait and Biographical Record of Stark county,
Ohio, either.
