I found you rmessage regarding David Forst. I am also researching this surname. Forst is my maiden name. My family also came through Stark Cty and their final destination was Huntington/ South Whitley Cty in Indiana. I have been trying to connect Samuel Forst to David. Is he his uncle? And is Thomas and David brothers?

Too bad I didn't check this site last night because I went to the Calif. State Archives today and was double checking a book called "Ohio Lands: Steubenville Land Office, 1800-1820" by Carol Willsey Bell, C.G.. I tracked down many original land purchases in this book.
Wow. The Raff I am researching is probably of the Raffensberger's from
Franklin County Pa. There are a lot of them there. My Elizabeth states on
the Ohio 1860 census she is a native of Pa and her husband ( I just completed
his line) was from St. Thomas, Franklin Co. Pa. There were Eastern Cherokee,
Coctow, and Delaware in that area. My one big clue is the repetition of the
name Lucinda in the family. I have a hunch my Elizabeth might have another
name and also I think she may have been born Howe,

If you are going to the National Archives in Washington, DC or one of the 13
branches, they should have microfilmed indexes which will direct you to the
microfilm reel with your grandfather's military
hello, can anyone tell me if and which Native Americans were in the
Stark county Lake township area about 1855???
i have always heard that we have Native blood in us but i can't figure
out where or who. the olnly one i could narrow it down to would be my
CATHARINE FULMER born 1837-38. i have been able to track down her
husband ADAM's back to 1725 and forward to his death in 1921. but when
he divorced her in ca1879, i lose her and can't find her listed
anywhere. so i thought it may just be possible for it to
Civil War military service records should be at the Archives. Pension
application files may or may not. I obtained one ancestor's pension
application files from the Archives and the other one is held by VA and I'm
still waiting for them. They have to get them from Suitland, MO. Apply to
the Archives and they will tell you if the VA has the pension file and will
give you the file number.
You can also use a commercial service that will go to the Archives for you
and copy any and all Civil War files for a
I think I tend to agree with Ron on the Gatewayed Messages to the List.
I at least scan ALL of the messages that come through the List in the
hope that maybe I'll run across someone else who may have some information
on my family. Every little bit helps!
Besides, I remember how to use my Delete key if the item isn't of
interest to me.

Cheryl,
One good possibility for the surname that is stumping you is
SHANAFELT. I know of a Carrie Etta Shanafelt who was born in
Uniontown, Stark Co in 1868 (and her brother, born in 1867, was
likely also born in the county). The parents were Levi S. Shanafelt
and Elizabeth Neubauer (about whom I have no further information; my
source for these names: Rootsweb World Connect Site, "Descendants of
Replogle/Brumbaugh...," Kriss Replogle, ). Do
the names Levi and Elizabeth fit
Hi All
My grandparents & several aunts & uncles are buried at Forest Hills,
Canton. They are Taylor's. My granmother Jane Turner Taylor's sister &
husband should be there too. Could SKS find Archie (Archibald) & Alice
Pyle. Jane died in 1938 age 62 I don't knw if Alice, her sister was
younger or older. I would say they may have died1948-1958 & would be
buried close to Jane if poss. Could someone get dates from Forest Hill
of death? I can then ask for death cert. With dates maybe someone could
find obits in
I have been reading the discussion concerning gate-way messages with interest. At first they were confusing for me when they appeared on my screen. I finally figured out what they represented. I just want to mention that I do read the full messages posted to the Rootsweb lists; however, I automatically delete any gatewayed message. I do not wish to go into another site to find a message while perusing Rootsweb boards. I will, on occasion, go to either Ancestry or Genealogy.com to check out their message
I don't believe you are going to find any Native American tribes living
in the Stark County area after about 1750. It was just too dangerous to be
close to the white man. Before that, small Delaware settlements might be
found. The Erie never got that far south of the Lake.
Oddly enough, I also am a direct descendent of a Raff. My Raff is Salome
Raff whose name was shortened from Raffins(berger). She married Charles
Sprankle. There is a question about the spelling of her last name.

Will someone with easy access to this census, please look up the Henry
Hodgon family at ancestry.com. I am a subscriber but for some reason
it will not load this page. It is ED117, pg 10a, Image 987 in
Massillon Twp, Stark Co, OH. I tried several times but it kept
disconnecting me. I had no problem loading other pages.

I've been following the discussion on gatewayed messages and would like to throw in my 2 cent worth:
First, I have no problem with them. I read all posts - no matter what the subject line and if it is of no interest... I delete it.
Second, I have read a number of posts which include statements about the poster not including their email in an earlier post - yet I open the referred to post only to see the posters email in the header. Now, how you view headers depends on your email client, but try the "View"

Hi,
I was in Stark County in April and spent three days at the Stark Co. District
Library in Canton. They are wonderful. They have a lot of the original files
(wills, estates, etc.?) as the court ran out of room. You just have to give
them your driver's license while you look at them (remember to get it back --
I didn't until the next day). I also copied from microfilm land patents of
ancestors and way too many land transactions.
I am researching Cable, Flora, Raichart and others many of whom went on
Is there any chance that you had a relative named Jack Braucher who lived in
the Canton/Massillon/Dalton area? Susi

Cheryl,
On my LDS early births CD, I found the name Shanafelt. I've included two
that I found in Stark County. Hope this helps. Thanks for the transcribing.

I don't think the records are at the archives. I got a
form at the archives to mail away for my relatve's
civil war record. You may need to go to the VA to get
more current records. I had to go to the VA for my
GGgrandfathers civil war record because it was still
active when most records were archived in the 30's (his
wife died in 1949)

Hi List
Would like to meet up with anyone who is also researching the following
descendants of the Catherine Hively/Phillip Battershell family: Have a lot
of information to share but need contact for info on the current & previous 2
or 3 generations. Know there have been reunions for years through articles
on the "society" pages of the Alliance Review. :)
Thanks!!

Anything I should look out for? I know prices have gone up
considerably.
Thanks, Debbie
Thank you Sandy! That's the family I was looking for. The name is
Grosjean. You were close.

I think the operative word here is "living". The presence of American
Indians along this frontier is documented. This area was used as a hunting
ground by many tribes. You are correct that the Wyandottes should be
included in the list of visitors. I am not aware of any discovery of any
village or other settlement that was in use by native Americans after 1750.
The only thing close is the "Indian Mound" at the corner of Arlington and
Portage St. Of course, it is from an earlier time period.

Ron, a beautiful post. It goes in the keeper mailbox.
The gatewayed messages should now be stopped. There are two set of
utility pages for the list maintainer. I have the old/original bookmarked.
