The Elk City library staff was very helpful and has some obituary cards, cemetery records, microfilms, funeral home records, etc. if I recall. Also Beckham County courthouse staff was very helpful - I got copies of some original land grants and directions to land locations. I did not go to a library in Erick. The ridge of a roof is where the angled sides of the roof run together at the top. The ridge pole is the pole used in a dugout to support the top of the roof. In the pioneer days on the prairie in many areas there was a severe shortage of lumber. What lumber that was there was very expensive. Most homes were a hole dug in the ground with some wood above the ground. The roof was usually sod. Insects, snakes, and rodents usually burrowed into the sod roof because it was warmer.
