His name was Earl Moore, and he was raised in the Heavener/Howe area. Lived there most of his life. I can't imagine him as such, but I hear he was quite the rounder when he was young. Rodeo, boxing, mining, a little of everything I guess, like folks had to be back then to survive. Do you happen to have the address for the Poteau Valley Genealogy Society? I am trying to find information on a Mary Martin who was said to have been placed in either the County Hospital or the Hospital for the Mentally Ill between 1920-1935-8. Her husbnd was Tom Martin, who is supposed to be buried in Sebastian County, Arkansas. It is Hwy 112, it runs from Poteau (by the new SuperCenter) to the North, all the way to Pocola... 112 deadends into Hwy 271 South at Pocola... There were a number of mines on both sides of the road... east of 112 is the Kully Chaha area, as well as Bonanza, Hackett, Arkansas... west of 112 is the Williams area, Panama, Bokoshe, Hogeye, Poker Ben... all were mining communities... ~ Suzy Johnson ~ Pocola, OK., Choctaw Nation www.hometown.aol.com/suzyinok

Robin, I have a picture postcard circa Jan 1912 of the Witteville Coal Mine, Poteau OK. I don't know where this mine was located in Poteau but it is a picture of the entrance of the mine with about 50 men standing at the foot of the tracks and at the entrance of the mine. If you would like a picture of the mine, I will scan and send. CeCe ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robin Ingram" To: Sent: Sunday, August 17, 2003 1:30 PM Subject: [OKLEFLORE] Coal

Robin, My Husband says would the mine your looking for perhaps have been the Turnipseed mines located, generally speaking, it would have been in the South area of poteau. They were pretty extensive, and probably later than the Whittville mine. Lorene At 06:30 PM 8/17/2003 -0600, Robin Ingram wrote: >Witteville is too early to have been the one I'm looking for. Melodee, the marriage books that I have only go up to 1916. However, there is a website at the Fort Smith, AR library that you can look up marriages. Some of LeFlore County marriages are there. Also try going to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~okpushma/ my great grandparents and other relatives lived in LeFlore County most of their lives, however when it was still Indian Terr. this is where a lot of the marriages are.
