My Husband and I went to Poteau and got this book and as Mr Swafford said it a must for people researching in LeFlore County. We gave less for this book than any other we have bought and it has more History and Genealogy in it than any other. I was expecting to pay much more for this book, and I am more than happy with it. Thanks for telling us where to find it, I had been told it was sold out and out of print. Lorene At 11:52 AM 12/1/2004 -0500, BUDROSE8312@aol.com wrote: >If you have the LeFlore

Mildred I found a James E. RITTER, died May 26, 1887 (?), buried in Nubbin Ridge Cemetery. The question mark indicates to me that the person that catalogued the cemetery was not sure about the death year. Nubbin Ridge is 3-4 miles east of Bokoshe, OK and several miles NE of Monroe. Regina, My mother was the one born in Poteau, I T, but we spent many summers there and in Spiro (paternal grandparents and cousins there) and grew up learning from her nearly as much Oklahoma as we did about Texas -- just wish I could remember all that she told us. My husband is the Horton -- we both grew up in Texas. His Horton family was originally from North Carolina to Missouri and then to Texas before 1880. They settled in the Van Zandt and Rains County, TX, area. If that matches any of yo

Budrose I hope this letter answers yours and everyone else's questions about the Leflore County book by Peck. The book "The Proud Heritage of Leflore County: by Henry Peck should be a "must have" for anyone interested in Leflore County history. I checked at the Poteau library and the cost is $ 21.69 if it is picked up in Poteau. The mailed cost is $ 24.19. The book is written by Henry Peck, 1889-1963 and is a compilation of his and others rememberances of the early Leflore County area. It includes stories a

Cecil, It seems we are thinking of the same house -- and our connection to memories of that house are similar. The reason I asked is that my mother lived there, too, from August, 1922, until she married in March, 1927. During that time, Sherman and Delia Pemberton owned the house. I believe they had lived in West Virginia prior to moving to Poteau sometime between 1910 - 1918. The Pemberton's had the City Bakery which was located on Dewey Avenue. My mother lived with them and worked in the B

Hi everyone, I want to thank you all very much. I sent to this list as Rootsweb does show a Rock Island in Leflore Co., OK. I was trying OK as I was thinking of OK & KS. I am from PA myself and they have old photos, so I found KS is included and have scanned the photo to the person in charge of the site to see if I could post the picture there. I have also posted a query on the McMann board to find out if anyone knows of one being a photographer. I really appreciate all of your comments. Betty in Hay

The Pemberton's owned the City Bakery when my mother started working for them in August, 1922, and lived with them in the house on Terry Hill. Somewhere I have a picture of her standing by the City Bakery panel truck -- think it was taken at the back of the bakery -- with two of the Pemberton sons. After the Christmas rush, I hope to dig through some boxes for pictures. Around 1925-1926, my dad worked for Western which was across the street from the bakery -- think maybe at an angle. They use
