I have agreed to be the coordinator for the collection of DNA (using a mouth
swab) from male O'Leary/Leary's to establish common ancestors. This came
about because the paper research reached a dead end, and several O'Leary groups --
in Wales, PA and IN, felt we were related. Unable to get back to the next
generation to confirme our suspicions, DNA was the only alternative we could
think of. We found a company who had done similar projects, at reasonable cost
(especially when shared with family membe
Some thoughts:
Have you found your GGGF in any census? 1851 or 61?
Same question for both Maurice and wife Mary Carley, checking census for
"clues." Before and after their marriage, where they met could be some of those
clues.
Have you located the church record of the marriage, as some RC church records
noted the parish of baptism, home parish, before marriage?
Then the obits see to hold some hope of clues, especially the 1864 death.
Might there be a coroner record or newspaper acount or even a will
Hi Patrick
I'm going to ask Don O'Leary to jump in here and give you the details of the
annual reunion. I think it's the weekend of August 22. And if Joe Creeden's
(the organizer and host) in earshot, give a holler! I'll be green with envy
if you manage to get there, Pat. Good color for an Irish lass...

Gen, have you found this family on the 1881 census? What about local church
records of the baptism? And, last question, what about the marriage
certificate of the parents? You've probably done these already, but never hurts to ask.
It's nice to see some activity at this site:>
Happy hunting!
Bonnie
Well, I don't know about the 1840's but I'm stuck too.
My O'Learys: James O'Leary born 24 Mar 1882, in Sheffield, England to James
O'Leary (suspected to have been born in or near County Mayo, Ireland and
Elizabeth Hardy O'Leary, place of birth unknown. That's about all I have.

Wow, you do have lots already. Sine you know the date, do you have James's
birth certificate from York? And was his father's name on his naturalization
papers?
Bonnie
Dear List
I have been working on the O'Leary branch of the family and in my research have found that 3 children to the above couple, who came out to Victoria, Australia, where they married and raised a family. I do not know what happened to Daniel and Johanna.
Patrick O'LEARY was born about 1834 in Ireland and died 1914 in Ondit, Victoria, Australia. If I am correct, Patrick married Mary Ann HYDE and had 16 children
Mary O'LEARY was born about 1837, and according to her marriage record she was born in C

Are you recieving your msgs. from an indivisual or the OLEARY Website?
I haven't quite made that much progress on my O'Leary branch yet. My
Grandfather, James O'Leary, a train engineer in Chicago, married Marie
Theresa Leonard about April 1907 in Chicago. I have him coming over on the
ship, Etruria, and arriving in New York in April 1906. His declaration of
intent names his last residence prior to immigrating as Castlerea, Ireland.
His registration of birth shows he was born 24 Mar 1882 at 4 Court
Rockingham Street, Sheffield West, Cnty of York, England. It names his

My grandparents, Marie Theresa Leonard and James O'Leary married in Chicago
at a Catholic Church about April 1907 but I have not been able to locate the
record. I wrote to the Archdiocese but I never heard back. I switched to
another branch of my family for a time and had great luck tracing them from
1960 back to 1694. Then about that time I started a new career and got a
little sidetracked.
This is a good time for the O'Leary list to get lively again.
What census are you referring to? Is it for England
The addresses I have for them are:
In Feb 1933 they lived at
7416 Indiana Avenue, Chicago
>From 1915 through the mid 1920's they lived at
607 West 48th Street, Chicago
In 1909 they resided at 2945 South Park Avenue, Chicago, IL
I suspect this to be James and Marie's first residence together. I also
suspect they were married nearby in a Catholic Church about April 1907.
The above addresses refer to the family of James O'Leary and Marie Theresa
(Leonard) O'Leary and their children.
For James, I have him co
Hi Mary,
The cost for the O'Leary/Leary surname lineage project is $195. That is for
1 test that covers 1 family unit that knows they share a common ancestor. My
cousins, brothers, uncles shared a common person, but only 1 test is done. The
oldest known male is best to test. All descendants do NOT need to be tested,
but may want to share the cost since the result is identical for them. I've
spent more on photocopies over the years:>
The test involves a swabbing of the mouth. No blood is drawn at a
Gen,
Ahhh it's different Elizabeth Hardy. My Hardy's from Midlothian, Scot. She
married to William O'Leary, her father was Henry Hardy and her mother was Ann
Greenshields. She was born on 2nd June 1864.
I have many William O'Learys dated back to 1844, the last William who was
born in 1844 in Cork. and his parents was William O'Leary (Listed as Leary)
and Mary A Rogers. His brother was John O'Leary and the parents was listed
different spelling William O'Leary and Maria Rogers, so I cant go further
You might want to check the Chicago City Directories to pinpoint the address,
which might give you a church to contact directly. Sounds like you have
collected many great records on this family already!
The census I was thinking of was the UK 1881, searchable on familysearch.com,
or the UK 1901 online, for a cost. The 1880 US is also on Familysearch.com.
Those are the easy next steps. Let us know how you're progressing. Loads of
records for those years ensure your ultimate success.
Peace,
Bonnie
I am trying to trace my O'LEARY/LEARY line. The earliest O'LEARY/LEARY I have
is my grgr grandfather Thomas O'LEARY/LEARY whose name appears on my
grgrandfather's marriage record in 1856 which gives Thomas O'LEARY/LEARY place of
residence as Dapto, New South Wales, Australia. Wife's name is Mary CARLEY. Their
son, Maurice David O'LEARY/LEARY's age is 21, place of birth Cork, Ireland,
and married Mary MCCROHAN, my great grandparents. The name Bridgett
O'LEARY/LEARY appears as sponsor on an earlier MCCR
Thanks, Mary.
If your brothers aren't on this list, you may have many more questions!
Thanks for your encouragement. After the O'Leary Reunion later this month in
Inchigeela, I may be sorry I volunteered. I have encountered loads of
Leary/O'Leary researchers who are as stuck as I am in that 1840 whirlwind.
Peace,
Bonnie
Gen,
I have Elizabeth O'Leary in my tree... Her maiden Surname was Hardy, who's in
your family tree that's related to Elizabeth?
I too stuck at 1844 as I can't get through William & John's father, William..
Have no more info on their father.

I've found the following explanation helpful in understanding Y-DNA studies:
Surname DNA studies examine the Y-chromosome DNA, which is passed from
father to son unchanged (except for occasional mutations) generation after
generation. Two brothers will have the identical Y-DNA as their father, and
will pass this along to their male offspring... just as they pass along
