These webpages are about folks from Co. Cavan and surrounding areas in
Ireland who emigrated to Canada in the 1800s and settled in the present day
Counties of Victoria and Peterborough.
The COOTE line of my ancestors goes back to before 1575,
making me at least a descendant of an 'old coote'
I'm hoping these data bases may be of interest to fellow listers and I

hello Frank:
I saw your request of Kathy Witheridge the other day and here is some info
you might be interested in.
My great grand aunt married Joseph Bingham, one of the small family of
Binghams that lived in the area. Joseph's uncle was Samuel Bingham, the
cooper at Tyrone. Joseph was the tinsmith at that village. Joseph's
father was an insurance agent at Bowmanville (travelled back and forth each
day to Tyrone) (sorry, can't locate his name right now). Joseph was
supposedly born in Quebec. All

My family in Durham co. includes these names. James ELLIOTT
and his wife, Christina (or Christiana) POTTS came to Durham
Co. abt 1820 or a little after. All but one of their
children were born there.
Would love to correspond, after the holidays, with anyone
who has ties to this family.

Hi Maureen;
Do you have these marriages? They look to be a child of James and

Hi, Bob.
With the exception of your message, I haven't seen any e-mails on ONDURHAM-L
since December 5... Because I received your e-mail OK, I'd assume that
things are just a bit 'quiet' at the moment.
Cheers.

Hi, Kathy.
I'd appreciate any searches on 'Porteous', except for the 1871 Ontario
Census index , which I already have. Please forgive me if I've asked you
this before (my 'Porteous' mailbox has 1,498 messages in it, and I haven't
done any filing for months)!
My Porteous ancestor (gg-grandfather, George PORTEOUS, who married Margaret
STEWART) arrived in the Reach Township area sometime in or before 1845. I
believe all of his children (William Simpson, Amy Ann, George, Mark, John,
Silena Margaret, Robert Si

Hi, Chris.
I found 27 SPRING's on the 1871 Ontario census index... 2 were in Markham
Twp., 2 were in Scarborough Twp., 1 was in Uxbridge, 1 was in Whitby West
Twp. and 4 were in Whitchurch Twp., the rest were in locations that I think
are farther away. As you probably already know, you can find these records
at www.archives.ca or http://130.15.161.15/census/index.html.
I can sympathize with you as it seems, relatively speaking, that there is
not a lot of historical information on the Reach Township area.

Hi Bob;
This list has been extremely quiet in the last while! Maybe it is time that
we got things going again!
I have a number of books on Durham County, as follows:
Index to the 1871 Census of Ontario
Surrogate Court Index 1859-1900 - Northumberland & Durham Counties
County Marriage Registers of Durham County - 1858-1869
Durham County Newspaper Index - up to the early 1900s

Hello List -
I am looking for any information on my ancestor,

I'm continuing to search for information about my gg-grandmother, Margaret
PORTEOUS (nee STEWART or STUART).
Margaret STEWART was born somewhere in the US (how's that for precision!)
ca. 1823. Margaret's family moved to Upper Canada (near what is now Port
Perry, Ontario, north-east of Toronto) at least long enough for Margaret to
meet my gg-grandfather, George PORTEOUS (1818-1898), "tie the knot" ca. 1845
and remain in Ontario until at least the 1891 census.
I've never been able to find an Ontario death r
Hi Bob and Doug,
It's been very quiet, I guess everyone is preparing for the big day.
I'm searching for Stevens family members by the way. David Stevens came to
Canada in 1796 with 12 other families. He was one of the the original
settlers of Darlington, and raised all 27 of his children there. He married
three times, first to Mary Burk, then to Nancy Grey, and to Roseannah
Lawrence. If you have any information on anyone in this family, I would
greatly appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks,
Barb
I must agree the list is so quiet I almost forgot I was part of it. I
am so glad someone woke us up.
I am looking for the Spring (surname - not the season now) who were /
are /still are in Reach Township area in the 1861 and 1871 census
times. They are apart of the Markham - Scarborough families. Does
anyone have any information on them as I tend to find so little on this
area. Maybe someone has a link to them. I have much to share with a
proven relative as I have traced them from 1743 getting off the

Hi Frank;
The only BINGHAM in the Surrogate Court Index is:
Charles Thomas BINGHAM of Hope - #2237 for 1886
The Durham County Newspaper Index does not go back to 1868, but
there are lots of BINGHAMs. An interesting one was:
Dr. J.E. BINGHAM of Moines, Iowa, USA, eldest son

Hi Everyone:
Searching for any info on different HOOD families who emigrated from East
Yorkshire, England in the 1800's. Some settled in Pickering, some
eventually settled in Scugog and some eventually moved to Huron. Any info
on the HOOD surname in Ontario would be very much appreciated.
