Still trying to verify parents of William Hourston, his marriage states that
he was from Lyking, he was born c1779.
While browsing "Kirkwall in the Orkneys" i came across a paragraph which
said that Lyking had been in possession of Louttits, and that a daughter of
Louttits married a Hourston. It also mentioned that the Hourston's sold Lyking
c1820.
I checked the sasines and sure enough William Hourston of Lyking sold to
Robertson of Stromness. It also stated that William Hourston was then residi

Came across a drowning in the 1915 Deaths for Orphir. The deceased was
from England. No relation to this family, posting it for the unexpected
link to Hertfordshire. Not sure how parent's names were gotten if he
wasn't a local.....perhaps he was swept off an English ship in Scapa

Hi there
I have a Stewart Sandison born 1844 in Westray to William Sandison and

info on her.

Would any readers care to suggest why Rev. James Tyrie, Minister of Sandwick
Parish would travel to Walls Parish to baptize a Walls child there on 12
March 1772, when Rev. James Bremner was the Minister in Walls at the time?
Thanks,

Fiona - The only Lyking that I can find in the 1851 census booklet for Evie
and Rendall is in Rendall - 6/28 occupied by James Wood and his family. I
didn't find a William Hourston, the right age in either the 1841 or 1851
census of Evie and Rendall. Good Luck in your search.

The book is called Fae Quoy Tae Castle and it's a wonderfull book. It
has photos [b&w] of all the house on the Isle of Westray.
Each house has a write-up with family names. The index however, is a
little skimpy and should be expanded.
I love my copy. It speaks volumes even without the words.

Most people with Orcadian ancestors will have Canadian cousins so I'm sure this will be of interest.

Well actually, Fiona, it does seem to be available from "The Orcadian",
but the title differs a little from the one you gave. Look here:

John Wilson and his wife Stewart Sandison went to grangemouth some time prior to 1868 can anyone tell me why they would do this leaving behind a son also John and returning to Westray some time after l868 The date of my grandmother `s birth in Grangemouth.
I have now added transcriptions of Flotta births/baptisms for 1840-1854
and marriages 1845-1854 to the Flotta Web Guide. This also includes
records for the island of Fara. You can find them at:

If you get no replies to this request, let me know and I'll pop into the
Kirkwall library for you next week some time and see if I can find it. But
someone may reply on line.

A fascinating question. Some of the more obvious possibilities are that
Bremner was sick or on vacation and Tyrie was "standing in" for him, or
that, as I believe was the custom, ministers occasionally used to "swap" on
Sundays, each visiting the other's church to take the services there. This
might entail a routine baptism.
But I find (from www.genuki.org.uk/big/easter/index.html) that 12 March 1772
was not a Sunday but a Thursday, which I believe was a favoured day for
baptisms.

Hi Jim and Norman
Thanks very much for your replies
Can you tell me if the book is relevant to finding out about the places etc
from way back or is it more recent? That might sound a bit daft but I want to
find out about the places etc regarding where ancestors lived.

William Hourston born c1779, unless he remarried between 1833 and 1841 he is
a widower.Possible children with him are Margaret born c1811,Robert born

accuracy etc)

That Thursday was a favoured day for baptisms and that other ministers
customarily attended local ordinations is new information to me and makes
some sense out of this particular situation. The parents of the child in
question were both from Walls families, but who knows . there may have been
some other previous connection with the Rev. James Tyrie from Sandwick.
Thanks for your response, James!
