Moin gang--
Just thought you might like to know that the list now has over 100
subscribers! That's plenty of voices--let's make some noise!
Thanks to all of you who have mentioned our group to a friend or two or
more and helped get the word out that we are here. And thanks for posting.
Without posts we're just air...or something...nothing?
There was still a chance I'd be going to the German Valley Fest until
earlier this week when my hopes were dashed. I hate to miss it and hope
that those of you who

Just read Gerriet's jokes about Ostfriesens and it jogged the following in
my (rapidly declining) memory. I heard/read once that the mother of the
Marx Brothers was from Ostfriesland. Does anyone know if it's true?
BTW, my born-in-Berlin coworker, delights in telling me Ossi jokes from
time to time. We found a page of them on the Net once and she translated
some of them. They are kind of like the state jokes in the US--South
Carolinians use North Carolinians as the butt of their jokes etc. But do

I have seen mention on this list of just about everywhere in Ostfriesland.

Hallo--
Those of you who have been with me from before this list, just hit the
delete button. It's about my Saathoffs. I figure there are plenty of new
members who haven't heard my cries for help in finding out about these
ancestors so I'm giving them a chance to reach the same level of boredom as
the "oldies".

This might be of interest to those of you who have IL ancestors,
particularly those in the vicinity of Woodford Co. Judith has been working
hard on this project and gave me the okay to forward it.

Lin Strong,
I received two e-mails that you had sent. I e-mailed privately to you
yesterday. Can you tell me if you received it? I was thrilled to hear
from you and very much appreciate you taking the time to look up the
information for me.

This is probably a dumb question but was there ever a census of
Ostfriesland done?
Count me in for the Plattdeutsch lessons. I see where rootsweb is giving
free webspace to groups maybe we could be a group and put it there.
Maybe it could be put up in 3 columns English, Palttdeutsch and German.
That way those among our company who don't know the regular German could
learn that at the same time. I know mine could be alot better! My
Vaughn-L list has its own chatroom -doesn't work too well with webtv
though
Eileen,
I think Bob Borcher's gave you the information that you were
searching on the Junker line that was in the East Friesen
Roots, by Rev. Kenneth DeWall. The book is only a list of
names of obits that were published in the "Ostfriesische
Nachrichten" that was published in Breda, IA, but the
information for the obits were submitted from all over.
To get a translated copy of these obits, you must send $5.00
for the first obit and $4.00 for each two or more after that

Regarding recent mention of immigration through New Orleans, does anyone
have any stories or narratives of immigration via this route? I would like
to read them if anyone feels like sharing them.

Have you done a search-engine query on the name? Very unusual
names are good candidates. That name, of course, has a prominent
personality associated with it, but you can find genealogy sites

I think it's age at death: 59 years, 1 month, 14 days
I am researching a number of surnames belonging to my Ostfriesen ancesters.
The two names that I have made the least progress with are for families that
lived outside of the Krummhorn area in the villages of Stapelmoor and
Wymeer. The names are HEITLAND and NOORDMANN. I know that my
great-grandfather, Henry H. HEITLAND, was born at Stapelmoor on April 14,
1850. He married Gretje NOORDMANN in the early 1870's and they came to
America in the early 1890's. I want to work from 1850 back for information

A reminder for some of you and new information to new members of the
group.
The OSB that will be published in 1998 and 1998 are:
1) Ditzumerverlaat
2) Eggelingen
3) Gro_wolde
4) Holtgaste
5) Marienhafe
6) Strackholt (December 1998)
We are taking orders for these copies - You will be notified when they
are published.
We have an extra copy of the OSB for Wybelsum and Westerbur (near
Norden) if anyone is interested. I am also sending in another OSB order
next week. We order Ortssippenb|cher for people
Greetings to all:
I have a question and a suggestion.
Would it be possible to get a profile of the individuals who post to
this list on a regular basis, and who offer help and advice to others?
Of course this would be voluntary, not manditory.
This profile could then be entered in the address book under properties
in the description area for persons with an e-mail address. I do this
now based on the postings that I read on this, and other mailing lists.
I would like to see some feedback on this subject

The "battle" of Langensalza was fought on June 27 1866. It was actually not
more than a major combat between Prussian forces under General von Flies an
the Hanovarian forces under King George. The Prussian war plan aimed at
separating the North German Allies of the Austrian from the South German and
Austrian main forces which were deployed in Bavaria and Boehmen (today
Tschechia). King George tried to break with his army through the Prussian
line to join the allied armies in Southern Germany. Gene

Hi Lin,
I've been wondering myself. All out partying I suppose.
Maybe you (or someone, Russ?) could help me interpret something
from an OSB listing.
In A.O., family #2542, Johann Friedreich M. married
who? I don't understand the (1821: Natje Cath. Claa_en Brahm)
entry and how it relates to the Johanna Christine Cla_en

Moin all!
Have to say again, that this list is really a lovely place in
the Internet - so many people who are willing to help in so many
aspects!
Referring to the rock candy, that Al mentioned, they're still an
important ingredient for Ostfriesentee. They've to be in the cup at
first, so that you can hear it crackle when the hot tea is poured
over it. The stick is somewhat unusual, normally you just have these
sugar crystals.
Just in case, you want to know, what they look like, go to
