A public radio documentary on Appalachias mysterious
Melungeons has received national recognition
for superior content and production.
The Melungeons: Sons and Daughters of the Legend was
produced in 1999 by Wayne Winkler, director of WETS-FM
(89.5 MHZ), Johnson City, Tennessee, and a Melungeon
descendant. The program first aired in January 1999 on
WETS, which is licensed to East Tennessee State
University. In May 1999, the program was distributed
nationally, and was subsequently broadcast in

WETS-FM DOCUMENTARIES WIN COMMUNICATOR AWARDS
Two radio documentaries produced at WETS-FM have won
national awards for excellence in communication. The
station, operated by East Tennessee State University,
is heard at 89.5 MHz and online at www.wets.org.
The Melungeons: Sons and Daughters of the Legend won
the Crystal Award of Excellence from The Communicator
Awards, an awards program for radio, televisio
The Melungeon Heritage Association has tapes and CDs
of the lectures from Third Union, held in Wise,
Virginia, this past May. Cassettes are $10, and
CDs are $15. The CDs, in addition to lasting much
longer, have pictures and biographies of the speakers.

As I got down before the Canoe, I spent some
Time in viewing the Rivers, and the Land in the Fork;
which I think extremely well situated for a Fort, as
it has the absolute Command of both Rivers. The Land
at the Point is 20 or 25 Feet above the common Surface
of the Water; and a considerable Bottom of flat,
well-timbered Land all around it, very convenient for
Building: The Rivers are each a Quarter of a Mile, or
more, across, and run here very near at right Angles:

Ernie Martin's documentary on the Melungeons which
aired on KET's "Kentucky Life" won Second Place
Documentary nationally among Public Television
stations at the NETA (National Educational
Telecommunications Association Awards on Tuesday,
November 3, 1997.
The program features interviews with Dr. Brent
Kennedy, Connie Clark, Bill Fields and Darlene Wilson
among others. It includes material on origins as well
as other fascinating historical evidence. Copies of
