I'm sure you probably know that Bailey (several different
spellings) is an extremely common name in Chester County, and many of us
have Baily ancestors. My original Baily emigrant, and true for many Chester
Co Bailys, was Joel, who first appears in local records in 1685...he had
many children, and his progeny are many. This said I found nothing for an
Andrew. I find a WM in Joel's line, and a Jeremiah, but all of the wrong
timeframe to be yours.....the name Wm seems to run through the g
I am also looking for a Mary Boyd who married Alexander Hindman, probably in Chester, ca. 1765. He was listed as "inmate" on the 1765 tax list. Suspect his father, or at least a relative, was Robert Hindman. No clue on who Mary Boyd was. Her name was given in a bible record of their daughter, Jane Hindman Coffey.
By 1768, Alexander Hindman had moved to Augusta/Rockbridge VA.

Another:
John Perry/Parry of "Marlborough" m. Margaret Pusey 9 mo., 16, 1737 at Londongrove FMH in Chester Co. Their marriage certificate (acc. to Gwen's transcription) is not signed by any other Perrys which supports the belief that John's family hailed from Massachusetts, also the place of his birth.

There are quite a few Hawleys in Chester, all descending, I think, from the
original emigrant, Benjamin , who came to PA in 1722, from England. He was
born 8-5-1703 and died 7-29-1782, ;the son of Thomas and Frances Malin
Hawley, of London. Benj. was a Quaker, and married his 2nd wife, Catharine
Hillborn, at the Birmingham meeting, 4-20-1763...he had numerous children.

I looked up Wm Boyd, in the CD of PA wills(offered as a lookup on the

1754 2 Londonderry wills
1759 a Londongrove will
1760 an Oxford will

The only trace of this surname I can find is a Jacob Nibel (Nipple), who was
a member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church, and whose name appears on a
1771 petition....as you didn't include what denomination Bethlehem Church
was/is, I can't tell if this is a likely ancestor or not.
There are no wills in the entire area (many counties) that contain the
surname Nipple, any spelling I can think of.

Sorry that I didn't include this originally, but I thought everyone knew
where to find it! There's also a link to the Chester County Archives at this
site. There are tons of new records added to their online database.

Seeing your reference to the Boyd surname I am posting this inquiry since I am
looking for Mary Boyd.
I am looking for any information (especially the parents) of these brothers,

Here is what I know.

The name of the church BETHLEHEM EVANGELICAL CHURCH. It's like Joseph
didn't exist prior to moving into Juniata County.
Thanks for the info, every little bit is helpful. I'm keeping the attitude,
that I'll will soon find a clue that will open the door to everything. Just
last summer I found a copy of the marriage application for one of Joseph's
grandsons, William. The application had that William's father, Perry was
born in Beavertown, PA. Perry was Joseph's second to youngest. So I'm

When searching for genealogical data, there are a couple things one should

Yesterday I address the subject in my query as W. Chester rather than W. Bradford Twp.
My apologies (Sr moment sounds like a good reason).
So my query does have to do with the things the colonists took out of Phila before the English took over. The story is it was brought to W. Bradford to hide it; but Howe's pillaging provided him with this loot. Heard about it but not read of it. Has anyone?

Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! Mail beta.
Gwen...do you know any more about the 'Jersey' prison ship?
I have been researching the STAPLETON family. There was a Capt. Robert STAPLETON in NYC who was Commander of that ship in the late 1690s-early 1700s.........I had read where it was used for a prison ship during the RW, but did not know any more until this email that you sent! Can't believe that 70+ yrs later it was still around! No wonder they died on it! I am sure accomodations on it were ancient!

Does anyone have anything on the parents of Lewis WOODWARD shown below? I know there was an Evan WOODWARD, a John, a Thomas, and a William WOODWARD shown in wills in Chester Co. (Lewis WOODWARD named his children these names.) He was a farmer in the censuses, in Robeson Twp. They appeared to worship at the Lutheran church since both buried at St James Lutheran in Geigertown, Robeson Twp.. After Hannah KERST died, Lewis remarried a Sariah KENNEY, who is also buried at the same cemetery.

Here's part of a breathless family yarn as recounted by Agnes (Loughead) Forsyth's son, James Forsyth about 1852 or so and 400 miles distant.
"When Philadelphia was taken possession of by the British, Agnes, Colonel Lougheads eldest daughter retired to Cross Roads, Chester County, to her Father's Sister, Mrs- McDowell, taking with her all her brothers and sisters, and as much store goods as could be carried, leaving the remainder in charge of her Mother who remained in the City. Hello to all,
I had an interesting day yesterday. I was contacted this week by the
Westmoreland Historical Society about a man out near Livermore in Derry
Township, PA. He was renovating his late grandmother's farmhouse, and while
rebuilding an outside stairwell that led to the cellar, he discovered
