The things I find interesting about this cemetery never cease to amaze me- I went up today for 2 purposes: one, to put a marker up at my family plot in section 200 that I'd made, and 2 to find the plot of Juanita Naron's family to get some pics for her.
My wife expressed interest in going this time, so I was glad to bring her and my daughter along for the trip (at least at the time of departure, lol). I think she was simply curious to see how odd of a cemetery this place really is, after all of my prior
Debbie,
I will tell you my opinion, in one word,? M O N E Y.? Or should I say the lack thereof?

I just checked the MM db on the Gen Soc of PA web site and there is no listing for this burial in section 200. There are in 208 and 211, but these two are for women. this is not unusual as the db is in incomplete condition and poorly entered. $x,88,x$:0`0:$x,88 Warren von Uffel 88,x$:0`0:$x,88,x$

Dear Jim,
Bravo! And even though experience thus far makes us all naturally skeptical,
bravo to the Mayor's office for at least a cogent, respectful response. We
have all needed to point up the problems and articulate what's wrong. So we
should acknowledge fairly anything that goes right.
I will be happy to work on the follow- up letters suggested. Give me about a
week or two.

Did you really expect to receive a reply to a letter to the mayor of Philadelphia?
The politicians in Philadelphia do not care about Mt. Moriah or any other cemetery.
There are a lot worse problems in this city. I just read an article on the dangers of drinking....
It really scared me. So that's it! After today, no more reading.

Jim,
NOT CHEAP , by any means. I have been researching 20 + years and have only come across one funeral home and one cemetery that wanted to charge $45.00 just to let me know he was indeed buried there! I said he sure is lookie here your office his stone, I would only like to have the family info from the obit, I am willing to donate a few bucks for that. I don't need the name and style of the vault or the coffin, but what is the most it would take walk over to the file cabinet that your resting your arm
John,
At least they haven't moved the place and turned it into a public playground.
My great-grandparents WERE buried in the Lafayette Cemetery in Moyamensing, south Philadelphia.
One of the sheriffs in that area sued to have it "moved" and housing built for returning WWII veterans. It went to court and was sold to a development group. The judgment was that they had to move 47,000 bodies and provide heads stones to suit. No! no houses were built only a playground. . . and several bodies have been unea

Jim,
Your marker is terrific! My Irish Episcopalian QUINN ancestors are buried
at MM. I went there once, but couldn't find them. I do want to return
again when I know others are going to be there.
Thank you for arousing interest in our poor cemetery.
My Catholic ancestors are buried at Cathedral, New Cathedral and Holy Cross.
All three cemeteries are beautifully maintained. It can be done!

As I mentioned in a prior email, here are the "before" and "after" pics of section 210, where the weeds were over 8 feet high in August! The first is actually 210 and 208, you can barrrrely see the road in between them towards the middle of the pic:

Buoyed by the enthusiasm of last night's historic election, I stopped by
the cemetery this morning to pay respects and check things out. Seeing
a car parked outside the office - an uncommon sight, lately - I went to
see if I could talk to Diane, or more importantly, the owner.
On the office door is a sign that sternly warns that office hours are by
appointment only and that you need to call to make arrangements first.
After considering my options, I knocked anyway.
Diane answered the door.
I asked

I hope your GSP Database can supply this information for me.

I only recently learned that one of my ancestors was buried at Mount Moriah, which caused me to join this list at that point.
But I don't know how to figure out how to get the lot # for her?
How did you do it?
thanks
Barbara
The Philadelphia Archives is a department of the city government. It can't do anything without city council approval.
I'm pretty sure that city council won't approve.
I doubt that GSP and HSP have enough money or expertise to handle such a lawsuit. Also, such things are not part of their charters or missions.
What other research groups?
Why don't you form a group and start raising money? If you charter a group, I will send a small donation.
Finally, it is over!
Gene Stackhouse.

Jim what a wonderful marker and how thoughtful of you to erect it.

Hi Kate,
Welcome back- It's not that I think people haven't been doing anything at
all, but I just don't see the benefit of people making jokes and talking
badly about the situation. It totally defeats the purpose of having a
discussion group about getting this problem resolved, when I see people
basically saying "yeah good luck with that".
Has anyone been in contact with the PCCFA? Their site is here:

They also replaced Ronaldson's Cemetery with a playground - and what an ugly dreary place it is.
American Mechanics and Oddfellows were replaced in the early 1950s with one of THE worst housing projects in the City's history.
Right before they imploded THAT in 1999, they found remains and parts of caskets.
Machpelah is a sad story. They moved everyone out of there in 1895 - to a part of Mount Moriah that has been pretty much forgotten.
Oh, and Franklin Cemetery's 6,000 occupants were also dumped into t

I went back again today (really only planned on going to HSP but I had a few hours to kill since they don't open until 12:30), and decided to "drop in" on the women in the office. I could tell the one woman (Diane) wasn't happy to see me coming with a folder in-hand (as she grunted to the other employee, Dolores, "genealogy....."), but I told her I had one easy question for her to answer: where is lot 291 in section 200. When she heard that she said oh that is an easy one, and went and got out the log- I
My grandmother and great-grandparents are interred at Mt. Moriah. From the website, one would think the lawns are neatly groomed, most of the headstones are standing, and relatives could take a lazy afternoon to walk through the stones directly to their ancestors' gravesites - with the assistance of a cemetery map given by a friendly office employee.
It seems this is sadly not the case. It also is sad that vandals and thugs have apparently "taken over" a part of the cemetery. Think of the years of tear

Hi Joe,
I'm not entirely sure of when my next trip will be, as my wife and I are
expecting our second child anytime within the next month. Anyone who's had
kids knows that the last month is shaky ground! However, I plan to hang
onto the requests that are coming forth, and get to them if/when I can on
future visits.
I really think all of us will need to keep tighter reins on where our
deceased are with this cemetery- I was pointing out to my wife today all of
the newer stones around our family's pl
