To all of those who responded to me about the Mt. Moriah scanned map, the
image on their web site is the same as what I have.

I did not know that the image was available. You can print the image by
right clicking on it and selecting print.

You have my support as several of my relatives are buried in MM.

I am in Delaware, so count me in for any help I may be able to give. Not so
much $$$, unfortunately, but I have time and willingness to help otherwise.

A quick note Stephanie, as life in Buffalo is little fraught just now. But
you've been nice and its a good question.
I have had several long conversations with caretakers at Laurel Hill, who
are wonderfully patient and a wealth of relevant historical and procedural
info. But I'm afraid they were not able to be at all encouraging about MM,
which is not endowed as they are. . .
This doesn't mean stop trying though.

But I still like beer even when I feel great. Beer is a reason unto
itself.
John,
I haven't visited the Mount Moriah Site lately and didn't know youhad made a
vidio. I really enjoyed your vidio. It really says a lot. Thank you for
all your effort and work you and the others do on the cemetery. I wish I
were closer to be able to help. I live in Florida. If there is anything I
can do from down here let me know. I did help with some transcription work
you did once.

Andy,
I have the folio number for the lot:
48-00-01013-00
The lot is located in Delaware County so the records would be at the
Delaware County Courthouse. The current owner is listed as "Cemetery Mt. Moriah."
According to the deed information, the cemetery was purchased in 1952 for
Teresa
You can see a map of all of the sections in the cemetery here:

Well, I guess all they can say is no.

I have amassed records from newspapers and user contributed information.
No information was obtained from the cemetery records directly by me.
I do not believe that the cemetery owners will provide copies of records
for any type of database transcription project, as they use this as a
revenue generating service (minimal as it is).
The Historical Society has a transcription of early records of Mount
Moriah, but they too are using it as a revenue source (through
membership access etc.).
The Mount Mori
Some reality is needed at this point, methinks. In order to pull a
project like this off, several things must happen. One of those is
resolution of all legal problems. The current owners must be identified
and investigated. Depending on the results of those investigations,
they may be approached in any of a number of ways. Playing nice is
best, but threats could come into play if conditions merited it. In
that case people would have to decide whether this is a tactic that we
wanted to engage in
You can try, of course, but frankly I would be surprised if they bit. I
don't think they give a damn about stuff like this. The only "human
interest" stories they seem to care for are the ones where soeone's
eyeball is hanging out of its socket. Call me cynical.

Kate,
Greenwood Cemetery is a long story, and because of legal issues can't get into it. However, the records are now stored in the office, located in the 'newer building'. They were kept in the old (late 1700's) historical Benjamin Rush House (another long story). The 'Friends' group moved them from the very deplorable cemetery office there to the newer bldg. The 'Friends' were given guardianship of the records to make sure they are kept and try to save them. Many of the records were in very bad condition
Does anyone know if there are Revolutionary War patriots buried in MM? If
so, we may be able to get the local DAR to help. Some DAR chapters are more
energetic and organized than others, and perhaps they could be of some
assistance. I would imagine DAR in Philadelphia to be fairly large. We may find a
lead on a retired patriotic lawyer from that group. It is just an idea. I
am checking into who is the "Regent" (top officer) for that group.
Janet
Thank you everyone for helping with finding these sections, so it looks like
it's pretty far in there/ and that 101 is across from 33. Now what i have
also says that at least 7ancestors are buried in 101 lot 409 does that mean
they are buried in the same grave? If so that means they just buried one on
top of the other, i wouldn't be surprised. Thanks teresa.
There can't possibly be people still selling plots and current burials there,
can there????? I live in FL, but I have seen the pictures, and I can't
imagine ANYONE paying money for a plot there, or burying a loved one there. It
would be like burying your loved one at the municipal dump.
Janet
Yes, they are.
The "newer" parts are kept up, but the rest of the place is a mess.
To hell with the folks buried there for decades!
True, but the certification of the individuals selling plots would still be
at the state level and presumably could be revoked at that level regardless
of where burials are occurring in the state.
